My brother-in-law is insisting this is a smallmouth bass but I say its either spotted or a largemouth. What do you guys think?

Its definitly not a smallmouth. Smallmouth don't have a visible lateral line like that. Never. Spots and largemouth do. I'm really thinking its a largemouth, but given just the picture I don't want to go 100% on that.

Definitely not a smallmouth... I wouldn't know a spotted if it hit me in the head, but that looks an awful lot like every largemouth I ever caught...

The only way I can tell is if the mouth is closed. The top jaw of a largemouth will come past it's eye and the jaw on a spotted bass will stop right at the back of the eye. But no, definately not a smallmouth.

So that is how you can tell the difference? I have always had some difficulty telling spotted and largemouth apart. Is there any other ways to tell? To me, the markings on the body are very similar. |

like wtl said, the lateral line will tell. also, smallies tend to be an almost bronzish color. then there is the fact that their mouthes dont extend past the eye, hence "smallmouth"

110% sure it is deffinatley a largemouth. here are a few pics to help, the first one is a largemouth i caught out of grand lake and the second is a kentucky (spotted bass) i caught out of table rock. notice the drastic color differences, plus how much smaller the mouth is on the kentucky. don't be fooled by the rough patch on the tounge that many say only kentucky bass have because a lot of largemouth have them too.

here in north carolina the coloration between spots and largemouth is very close. the mouth size is the #1 way to tell.. zooker

at times the color here can be really close as well, but the kentuckies always have a really brilliant white belly where the largemouths bellies are more of a dull white or gray. not really sure if that is the same all over or not but i thought that would be one difference that might help him out.

Thanks for the responses guys! I gave him the ol' "in your face!" after telling him about the unanimous response from this site. He actually went as far as to wager a year salary on it so I guess I'll be sitting pretty should I make him pay up! LOL
