just curious about some of the top water lures that you've had
luck with

First of all welcome to the nuthou...errr... forum. Relating to the topic, it depends on the conditions. But for an all around bait I like a Spook.

starting to use a spook and buzzbait little more than i used too. have been a huge pop'r fan, and done real well with it, for years.

i am just a fan of the explosion on top of the water, so i keep trying different topwaters because they are exciting.

in post spawn i hit the top water hard and early in the morning. there is a lot of top water lures out there but i would have to say that using a ex caliber spiting walking dog or my fav. reaction innovation vixen (blue gill or perch) has been more than productive.

My favorite topwater is probably the Baby Torpedo. I also do very well with a banana shaped spook type bait made by Yozuri. It is similar to a Zara Spook, but with a curved back design. Also, the tail end of the lure sits below the surface and the head sits just slightly out of the water. To me, this is a much more natural looking presentation. With this lure, I find it easier to use the "walk the dog" retrieve. I also am a big fan of the floating version of the Smithwick Rattln Rouge stick bait. Although it is not technically considered a surface lure, I use it as one. The bass in the picture of me here was caught on the Rattln Rouge.

2 14 inchers last night in a subdivision pond on a torpedo. I love that propeller walkin the dog works so well after dark.

I haven't had any luck with any topwater lures. After reading this board I found out it is because I had fished them during the wrong times of the day (noon to around 2 pm).

I had one hit on a floating frog once around 11 am during a camping trip but I got excited and set the hook too early. I have yet to have anything to hit on a buzzbait. I prefer throwing weightless worms and lizards into tight spots and letting them slowly sink.

I have that exact popper. It was one of the first fishing lures I bought. I may need to dust it off and try it again.

i always start with the popper..when i go in the morning i have two rods..baitcaster with buzz bait on it and a snap swivel on a spinning reel.. and the popper goes out for about 20 casts then i go back over the area with a buzz bait then try a new area with a popper..then buzz bait then i have a rig in my box witha swivel on it about 8 inches of line and a hook with a weight.. then i can use that rig whenever i want to fish with a snap-swivel.. then i reel fast across the top either paralell to the pads or cast into the pads and reel away from the pads.. and the tail action draws them up.. i fish these lures from as early as i get there to 9:00 or 9:30 in that area then the sun gets over most of the pond. But i have had luck on buzzbaits as late as 1-3 in the afternoon .. heat of the day.

Lately I've been on a buzzbait binge, early morning, say 4:30-6:00 AM. That is the only topwater I really throw, besides a Heddon Spit'n Image, but that's only at the pond behind our high school.

To me, there is such a plethora of topwater baits, it's scary, so I try to just fling one or two.

If this is a poll like question to find out what you are planning to purchase then the answer is I´ve had "luck" with any topwater available in the market with one exception, buzzbaits, they don´t produce for me, I can count the times with my fingers I´ve caught fish with with buzzbaits.

Why they don´t produce for me ? I have no idea

A lizard with a lightly weighted swimbait hook (for casting) works well on top, and is a different look from a buzzbait or frog.

This year it has been a Strike King Spit-N-King in bluegill, worked around shallow weeds, timber, etc. Other colors have also produced such as chartreuse/black, chrome/black, and chrome/blue.

The buzz bait has been good for me early but my bigger fish seem to coming off frogs and shad plastics.The water is hot down here and i know it sounds wrong but it has been working well if the fish have grass or some good shade to attack from.

I've done okay with buzzbaits across the hydrilla farms in Gaston. Late dusk to dark seems to be the best. I haven't had the same luck with poppers. Sounds like I should try a lizard/frog next time out

It has been so hot here that only the lazy and slowest of lures is working. A nice meal in front of their face where they don't have to do a lot of chasing seems to be working well. I have been using wacky rigged plastics and they have been producing. In the evening if I see the fish making boils and hitting the top I will throw a topwater as I have mentioned earlier. Torpedo, Pop'r, and Jitterbug work as well as chatterbait and several others.

My current topwater lure of choice is the Stanley Ribbit Frog, really have had a good summer with those... a couple 4.5-5 pounders and smaller ones too numerous to mention

Raul, i fish mainly Spooks, Sammies, & Bronzeye frogs but buzzbaits can be very effective. I do well with them with wind & overcast conditions fishing them primarily around any type of shallow cover from 1-5 ft or so. If you try that, you may be surprised at how much action you get.

As far as time of day goes, often times i get my best topwater action in the afternoon hours.

Some people avoid throwing spooks & sammies in lilly pads but the reward can be huge. I actually catch most of my bass by either working them on the edges of the pads or dropping it in any decent size hole in the bads & having it walk a fews times. Then i'll kill it right next to a pad. I get many hits by doing that.

I noticed alot of people like the Heddon Torpedo. I haven't fished it yet. Do you walk the bait or reel it straight in & pause it?
