so i've got the boat, now i need to pull it
most of you have seen my thread about the boat that i aquired on my last thread. I have two vehicles, a 1997 toyota camry and a 1992 Mitsubishi Montero. The montero was my first vehicle, 4x4, 6 cylender, geared low, great toy lol. it can pull my boat but the gas milage sucks. The camry gets amazing gas milage (500 miles to a 16 gallon tank!) but its a camry, it can't pull a boat. So i am thinking of comprimizing and selling them both to buy a small truck. I want something thats rugged and powerfull enough to pull my boat and get me back to my duck holes, but still gets decent gas milage. Does anyone have any suggestions on what vehicle would be best for this?

I'm not going to get into the Ford-Chevy-Dodge debate, they all make good vehicles and they all have produced many lemons.
Dodge Dakota's are a pretty good mid-sized truck that come with the option of a V8. Ford Rangers are durable in my experience. The thing is, you arent going to find a vehicle that can tow it well that gets the MPG of the camry, so dont try. Get something that doesnt have to fight to pull the boat, I blew a head gasket in my explorer pulling a tracker up a hill.

i own a 4x4 ford ranger with a v6 i get 19 miles to the gallon with it..
i also drive a 4x4 nissan frontier with a 2.4 4 popper, 25 miles a gallon... if i want milage i'll drive the 08 kia rio my girl friend drives -38 mpg-... i don't like to pull with the nissan as the turning ratius is the same as a full sized chevy long bed pick up.. and it has a tiny 12 gallon tank.. i love the ford rangers having owned 6 rangers since 1988.. zooker

not debating either, but....... look at the trailblazers by chevy. straight 6 inline, with a towing package. we pull my 20' cajun bass boat withit. and it gets decent mileage. PLUS you have room for cargo.

Just wondering but have you looked at putting a hitch on the Camry? I'm pretty sure that'll pull a small boat.

I think I would be afraid to pull a boat with a front well drive but that is my opinion.

i did consider putting a towing package on the Camry as the boat is only about 500 lbs. But like Earl Marshall said i am worried about it being a front wheel drive. could be bad.

i had a 93 mercury sable wagon i pulled my vintage 58 glasstron with..that thing definatly weighed twice what my stratos weighs.. that front wheel drive pulled out the jon boat from several ice covered ramps on the coast also...
don't why i had a wagon..long story zooker

Keep the camry, sell the Montero and buy the cheapest old 4x4 you can find on craigslist. Pull the boat, hunt, haul stuff and beat the snot out of it, and then use the camry when you actually want to drive somewhere. Just my .02.....

toyota 4wd, if you can find one. dependable, v-6 will pull your boat, will mud with mildly agressive tires, and 20 mpg down the highway. you already own a camry so i don't know why you are wondering what kind of truck to buy !!
can you tell i regret selling my 98 tacoma ? if it wasn't for the wife needing a commuter car ( 09 corolla ), and already having a Z-71, i'd have kept that little truck forever. |

and for everyone else, i have read over the manual for my Camry, like i said the hull only wieghs 500 lbs and with motor and trailer i'd say that it would be about a 800-900 lb load . It said it can tow 2000 lbs, this car has 228000 miles, i had the engine rebuit this summer, all gaskets and seals changed. I'm worried about the trans going out on me but i planned on replacing that this summer. i was also thinking about beefing the rear suspention up, i believe it should be able to hanlde it after all of that. and the montero gets about that same gas as anyother V6 4x4 which is why i was looking at a 4 cyl truck. thanks guys

For Bama, the dunk came easy, now getting it back out of the peach basket was an issue.
