took the boat out today for the fist time since nov. my yammer was stubborn about trimming up. down was fine but up i just heard the relay clicking. it did this using either the switch on the motor or the one on the throttle. it finally started working but still acted up at times. anybody got any clues? is the relay a 2 sided part and maybe mine is about to fail just on the up side?

now low does it still work well?? i have found that with my yammer the longer it sits in cold weather. the colder the trim works.. was it like the first time you trimmed it?? but now it is working.. during the the 3 month idle time was the moter all the way down??
ya could be low on fluid -there is no easy way to add more- zooker

there is a relay on the motor or at least there is one on my johnson 200 and it probably needs changed.

1. still stubborn when i got home. it worked, but sometimes i have to hit the button several times.
2. the motor sat up on the toter bar through the cold weather. one thing that we noticed is that it had raised itself up a little, wtf? 3. i know where the oil reservior is...how and what type of oil do you use. btw i took the cap off and a little oil came out as far as the clicking i heard, it came from under the hood of the motor. i assumed it was a relay. |

check wire connections they could be dirty this would cause such a issue. MY.02

update. now it's done a completly wierd thing, today it started going down all by itself. i had taken the motor off the toter when i parked and let it down but it kicked on, went down and the trim motor stayed running till i unhooked the battery.

thats a switch or a relay... friend of mine had a nitro that keep trimming up..killed his battery twice..

Front switch or the shifter switch or on the motor switch has water in it.

thats an interesting concept capt, the front of my boat kinda hangs out from under the roof and does get wet if the wind blows just right.

didnt think i needed to make a new thread so, my trim is just clicking when i try to trim up or down? i couldnt figure it out earlier need help yamaha pro-v 175

I had the same problem at the end of a tournament...my engine was trimmed completely up and I was in a cove of 2-4ft of water and could not lower the engine...it just kept clicking...I had an extra relay with me and changed it out in time to get back to the weigh in...most boats (I believe) have two relays somewhere on the engine, one for up and one for down...the clicking on mine was coming directly from the relay switch...can't say for a 100% if thats the issue but it sounds like it

i think you hit the nail right on the head. im willing to bet thats the problem.. its a Super clean engine but it looks like there are two relays as you said and the clicking is actually knocking off corrosion. i kept thinking it was trying to fire but i dont have a whole lot of experience in this engine. any idea on a price range?

They tend to be around $20, I have a 2000 Merc EFI 200HP and my switch was $24...but you might want to buy 2 and throw one in your boat somewhere as a spare...If you take your old one out and bring it to NAPA or another car parts store they should be able to match it up...my relay switches are identical to the ones they use in chrysler vehicles for electric windows.

as confused as ever...
well, mine hasn't clicked anymore trying it from time to time sitting in it's parking spot. i checked the front switch for moisture and found none, connections looked good. went to my local yamaha shop and the guy there said that after a couple of months of sitting maybe the brushes in the trim motor were just a little stuck, he didn't reccommend me getting new relays. go figure, he sells em! so i'm gonna take it fishing and hope all is good. first click gets 2 new relays though. they only cost around $30 each and i can put em on myself. |

I've also heard that at times the contacts in the relay can stick closed causing the trim motor to spill over.

guess what fellas.. trim problem fixed.. motor wont crank, just wont turnover.. my buddy says he checked the spark plugs and said there was water in there?? didnt even think that was possible?

just gettin back on after a few days so i thought i'd post an update.
got on the water sunday and fished about 6 hours with NO problems from the trim. it went up and down every time i hit the switch, all 3 of them, and never showed 1 sign of anything being wrong. gonna keep my fingers crossed and see how it acts getting more regular use. |

First things first. Get a compression check done. It could be nothing more than the last time you used the boat when putting her on the trailer she swallowed a little water. I am guilty of that alot. A compression check will tell you if there is a need to do any further diagnostics or not.
