Need some more information there, buddy. You can't judge what you're going to throw just by temperature.

theres the pond.. the one on the right isnt connected to the other two..
it its mostly clear water.. probally classified as cloudy.. deepest probally 10 feet around the bridge area and in the lower part of the pond.. hardly no lilly pads this time of year , of course.. does that help?

Just remember work it a little slow, but if the water temperature starts to get a little warmer you might be able to work the worm weightless and get a few bites in shallower areas near structure...

with the texas rig, just work the bottom and pop your rod up with little pops until there is a lot of slack in the line and you pretty much can no longer pop it, slowly reel in your slack and repeat, most of the time the bite comes on the falling or a second or two after it hits the ground...when going weightless reel in a constant motion with twitches of your wrist while reeling, you can play with the twitches in your wrist for more movement of the worm. and the speed as well...the worm should be just a few inches under the top of the water..try to get as close to structure as possible..I know alot of people would say that working the bait weighless like that would not work right now, but you will be surprised where bass sit when they feel a hint of warmth.

come to think of it...I caught my only bass so far this year, I have on fished once for 10 minutes...I caught it weightless working the worm beside a log in a pond, the water temperature was freezing, but there was one there.

remeber this early sucks in the winter. i would hit it about 11am or so i would work a fluke slowly using a 1/16 or 1/32 oz weighted hook.. rocks hold heat, red clay banks warm faster, dead veggies do hold fish but like rocks later in the day...for get about hunting the shaded areas this time of year.. they won't be there..
saturday i'll be headed down to chatlee marine to look at a xpress boat.. zooker

I always use a suspending jerkbait this time of year. Work it slow and give it 5-10 seconds between pauses. I also like a jig with a Zoom Speedcraw for a trailer. I'll throw cranks and blades too but those are my 2 favs for this time of year.

Something like this:
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...005000_100-5-0 It has a lip so it'll dive like a regular crankbait, but it doesn't float. If you stop retrieving, it will stay at the same depth instead of coming to the top. It really tempts the sluggish cold water bass by staying right in its face. |

+1 on the jerkbait. Learn to use one and you won't regret it.
But I'm not sure how clear the water is - murkier will make anything tougher in cold weather. |

I've caught fish on several different brands of jerkbaits but the Rogue is probably what I've caught the most on. It's my favorite. Clown is the color I like best as well.

Ahhh, Yes the Jerkbait that suspend & sits motionless at the depth you jerk it down too, keeping the bait in the strike zone longer, giving sluggish fish a chance to come up and investigate the bait, get a good look at it, And WACK! (not always but sometimes)
Its a matter of who blinks first, the fish or you! ![]() Just keep giving the bait small jerks and pops with your rod tip, and you might be surprised, work it around areas that are getting direct sunlight, Like someone mentioned above, Clay bottoms, & rocks are going too take in the heat from the sun, Thus warming the water around it. And there is always a certain side of the lake that is getting more direct sunlight than any other side, even if the water temp. is 1-2 degrees higher in that water, it's where those fish are going too position at in the rest of the lake. At time of year, its important not to jerk the bait to much, or sweep it after jerking it, Just let the damn thing sit for 10-15 seconds, This is sometimes called "Dead Sticking" and is more common with soft plastics, but jerk baits can do the same if you know how to work them. I see so many anglers throwing a jerk baits like rapala original floaters, or Broke back rapala's (Aka jointed) and they are slamming the bait back to them like they are fishing for sail fish in the pacific ocean, speed reeling the bait back to them, as if they fish is going to swim 35 mph and smash the bait. Rookies! (lol) The action is in the name of the bait itself, JERK~bait, you jerk it, and let it sit, jerk, let it sit, Sometimes jerking and Than Sweeping it with a semi-long pulling towards you with only your rod, while reeling in slack line is a good action for bass suspended above trees in deep water, But jerking has always been the ticket for me. P.s. if you need to grab a thermometer from the Store, that has a area where u can tie your line onto it, DO IT!! drop that in the water, Probing for 45+ degree water temp, remember the warmer the water the better your chances of catching bass. GL and keep us posted,

Try to use a C-rigged floating something, and floating jerk bait would also work, same with a crank bait--all on the c-rig. Keep in mind the fish will be slow and sluggish, deep most of the time, holding to rocks or sea wall, anything that will hold heat! Give a slow, and small presentation. Tubes also work very well when it gets colder. If you Use a jig, make sure you trailer will not put out many vibes, try a pork rind! A new technique I've herd is to get a spending crankbait and sssllloowwllly crank it along the bottom, stopping it regularly. I have yet to try this.
So how'd you do, on Friday if you went?
