I see alot of threads regarding line on here and which is better. I'm specifically talking about line memory and breakage. Lets say for the sake of this post we have line A and line B of the same type and size but different brands. Would it be possible that line A may have less memory in say, 35 degrees where as line B may have less in 80 degrees? The same for breakage. It would be intresting to see if the users climate effected thier preference or the preformance of the line.

I have no scientific data to back this up, but from experience my lines have issues when they go through extreme temperature changes. I have found that spools purchased in my location will have issues when I take them to colder climates. Even if I do not use them or have not had them for very long.
Last year I got a chance to fish in the sierras and took some stren mono with me from here. (I had just purchased it two days before the trip) I found that it broke a lot easier than it should have. I bought the same line there and found that it performed like it should. Now I may have gotten a bad spool, but I suspect that the 50 degree temp changes had a lot to do with it.

i might think that it might happen that way because differnet materials have different chemical and physical properties...

I think that the performance will be the same as long as they are away from the sun. The UV rays can do damage on line big time!

Most mono lines will become stiffer in colder water. That's why we use special ice line when ice fishing. But overall, I think if brand A had more memory than brand B, both at 80 degrees, then A will have more memory than B at 30 degrees as well.

Now braid has no memory, but it doesn' like temps much below 32 degrees as the water freezes in between the strands. This is one time where you can't use enough line conditioner as it helps to keep the water out, and the line nice and soft.

I've used Power Pro on my ice fishing rods with 3-lb. Stren monofilament leaders for over two years, line and all else is fine, knots, connections and all. What line did you have a bad experience with, Joel? -Buzz |
