Default Telscopic rods

has anyone used any of them? I did some side work for a guy and he wants to pay me with a rod. It is a St Croix telescopic 7'11" I know that it retails around $200 and will cover the work I did, but I am not sure if they are any good since I have never used one.

Is it in an action you need? 7'11" almost dicates it be a flippin stick, do you even need one? I've used a real cheap telescoping rod before, it got the job done but I would never have used it over a 1 part or 2 part. I have used a 5 part flyrod extensivly and that has been ok.

I was going to use it as flipping stick. Not quite enough backbone for swimbaits.

The telescopic flipping sticks are fine.It makes it easier to store since the length would be troublesome were it a 1 peice rod.I have 3 7'6" 1 peice rods and they are awkward to throw in the car to fish a pond or whatever. Most boat lockers take a 7' rod or shorter. P N J

I say it since he's giving it to free (or fro the work you did) that you should take it. May turn out to by your favorite rod, or it could end up the one you never use.

I say go for it!

My flipppin' stick (7'6") is telescopic. It is nice that it fits into the 7' rod lockers in da boat, and it fits in the truck.

If you refine the definition to mean rods that telescope a portion into/out of the grip section, there's not a thing wrong with them so long as you don't jam them in the extended position or yank them into same, which might do damage over time.
Very little sensitivity is lost when in use since there's close contact at the joint. There usually little or no weight gain either.
Better to be able to stow the rod safely than to leave it on deck or jammed into the vehicle.

I am leaning towards the money. The rod was worth more than what he owes me so that is why I considered it.

I have a St Croix 7.6 flipping stik telescoping and it is great.. Stout and strong enough for flounder trolling too. I have used for black drum too. But for heavy matt punching it can not be beat..

my flipping stick is telescopic and i love it. does the rod have enough backbone for a frog rod? 7'11" is a pretty long rod but depending on how comfortable you are with longer rods it might make you a good frog rod.

It probably could be a frog rod, but I already have one dedicated to that function. I am very comfortable with 8 foot rods so the length is not an issue.
Based on Capt Mike and C-rig's input it looks like I am getting the rod. Of course I need it like a hole in the head....lol

My flipping stick finally arrived today. It's an Evolution -- telescopic 7'6" feels nice will putting a reel on it and head down to the pond tomorrow and try it out.

I have two 7'6" that telescope and they work fine for me. They fit in my boat full length but if I am a coangler they may not full length in theirs. I keep my index finger on the line and they work fine. I like the long length but I am tall and that may make a differance why I like them.

I agree with woody! I would also rather have cash, but is that an option?
