This happened one day on cachuma lake, I found a great zara spook jr. bite. I caught fish like crazy, late May, little 1 to 2 inch fry all over the surface. I was fishing a largemouth pattern jr. spook and I came across this one fish. I saw it come from about 10 feet down to strike my lure, it missed, I backed up and fished it again, same result. I backed up and tried a jerk bait, a crank, a worm, all deeper down and more right in front of that fish, nothing. I backed up and threw the spook, the fish shot out and again missed the bait. The reality is my friend was pre fishing for a tournement with no luck, fishing more traditional post spawn baits, he was shocked I had a surface bite. What I am trying to say is experiment and don't just go with the traditional bait for the season.
