the boater and non boater weigh there fish seperat for the points standings, but the tournament comittee will add the weights up for the money...1st place is usually close to 250$ then 2nd is like 150$ then 3rd is like 100$

Remember you are going to be with someone that already knows the lake, bring enough tackle to fish many different situations. You will not be sure what technique they have been catching fish on, think of it as a guide service, they take you to fish all you have to do is catch them.

clubs are a great way to learn. you will be able to get a feel for tournament situations, learn lakes from guys who know them really well, and probably learn new baits and different ways to use them. from time to time you may draw a guy who doesn't really take it too serious and is just out for fun, that's ok too just have a good time and learn what you can.

check the club regulations. i bet they require insured boats..if i was you all i'd fish non-boater for a year or more. that way you can learn lakes they fish. and the baits they use to catch fish..i would definatly use a hand held gps unit so you can remember the "safe" tract.. sc tourny guys are like the nc guys figure on 8-10 hours of just hammering the banks..i bet you'll be so tired ya can't lift your arms the first few tourny's.. zooker

also, i meant to tell you this earlier, since the fish should be on the bed that day, practice pitchin...get a bowl or a pot or something and stand abt 20 feet or more away from it and pitch to it...it will come in handy in the tourney

Some Advice:
As a non-boater it's always customary to pitch in on gas and be respectful of the driver, don't bring more gear than you can carry in one trip from the truck to the boat and always ask him where you can store your gear. Bring your own PFD and don't forget to bring some food/water...8 hours of fishing will take a lot out of you. The worst part of being a non-boater is dealing with secondary spots, you will be in the back of the boat all day, unless he is really cool and shares the front deck with you (unlikely). Good Luck and soak up as much info as you can...

it is a little harder fishing out the back of the boat, but if you just fish something other than what the boater is fishing you should do fine.
dont be afraid to ask them for advice...i have never had a boater not tell me how he was fishing something or why he is fishing something...theyre are alot of good guys in the club. |

This is excellent advice. When I fished as a co-angler I always paid the ramp fee and threw in $30-$50 for gas depending on how far we travelled on the water. Owning a bass boat is VERY expensive so be sure to chip in, nothing will get you in bad graces with club members quicker than not paying any gas money. Also be sure to help clean the boat after the tournament and try to learn how to back up a trailer so that you can be helpful during the launch. |

Fishing from the back of the boat does have disadvantages depending on the guy on the front. I've been front ended by some of the best and it is frustrating. Most will not do that to you. Here's a couple things to do. #1 make sure you pay attention to how the person in front is fishing. Is he/she dragging the bait, hopping the bait, or swimming the bait. #2 some say to not use the same bait as the person on front. My advice is if he/she is catching fish and you aren't then switch up. If he/she isn't then continue to try a different presentation meaning go vertical vs horizontal or opposite of what your partner is doing. #3 Pay attention to the type of cover your partner is fishing. If he/she is fishing stumps next to docks and is catchin fish then don't be afraid to follow up and do the same. #4 Don't be afraid to fish away from the bank if your partner is fishing shallow and isn't giving you much to fish. There are plenty of fish in deeper water. #5 make sure you understand the netting procedure your partner uses. Don't scoop unless told to do so. #6 Offer to cover half of the cost for the day. Ramp fee, gas, oil, and insurance cost $$$$ for both the boat and tow vehicle. Ask before you fish what the normal costs are so that you'll be prepared. #7 Learn as much as you can. You should be able to learn something even if it's that you never want to fish with that person again.
