Now, I have been known to do some dumb, foolish, and even funny things while fishing. I don't think that my mistakes are often in the stupid category. (My wife would debate that).
Today's incident can only be described as stupid. I went down to my lunch time fishing pond for an hour. I was tossing paca-craws on a 3/8 shakey head with some very good results. I landed three in the first 20 minutes, the biggest right around 3lbs. I was also tossing the floating BBZ around the edges of the tullies hoping it would get ambushed. I noticed that my Johhny Morris reel was making a little more noise than normal. It appeared to be casting fine, but just didn't sound right. The last time I had a similar sound, the magnetic brakes were not seated properly in the dial, so I figured I should check that. Now a smarter man would have reeled is line in and begun the inspection. Nope, not me. Following the weird sounding cast, I turned my reel on it's side and took off the side plate to check the brakes. I am sure most of you can guess what happened next. Yep, my dead stick BBZ caught the attention of hungry bass. While the fish was no giant by any means, it did a number on my half of a reel. My line, lure and fish went straight into the tullies without me being able to do a think about it. Tonight I will be adding line to my now empty spool and tomorrow back at it again. Moral of the story, reel disassembly with a line in the water is a bad idea. Here is the better fish of the day.
