What reel?

I fish the Rapala #5 Shad Rap a lot. What is the best baitcast reel to use with this crankbait?

I like the Shimano Curado 200e7. Its smooth and casts a mile.

Do you normally fish it slow or burn it. I have been thinking about a Curado E5 (5:1 21" line recovery) for my cranks. I need to SLOW down. The best reel is like beauty though. It is in the eye of the holder hahahaha.

I would go with a smooth low gear ratio casting reel. Try one of the low gear ration curado E's I have not used them before, but I hear they're very smooth and cast great too! I also know that a lot of folks use BPS David Fritts cranking reels and love them! Give those two a lookin' at!

I actually like my curado 200. it has a 7:0.1 ratio. I like it because i can burn it if needed or slow it down. I have that option. It comes in handy when the fish are swimming toward the boat when your trying to set the hook. Could be the difference in saying you missed the fish of a life time and you caught the fish of a life time.

I find that if I truly need to "burn" a lure, we're talking a real emergency here, like about to lose a fish...I can do it plenty fast with even a low gear ratio.

I think the reason to go with a different ratio is for a retrieve you are going to be doing five hundred times a day.

my vote is for the revo winch. it has pleanty of power cranking.

Wow! I dunno why but I though the revo winch was like $250!?! That's why I said curado. But seeing that it basically the same price... go with the the revo winch!

Seriously, I don't fish rivers much. But it seems to me that while yes, you would benefit from a high gear ratio if you were casting against the current, that same high ratio would be a pita if you were casting with the current. A big-lipped crank is hard enough to pull through the water.

However, I still don't think we're really disagreeing. If you're on the river, you know you're going to have to do a lot of fast retrieves. My point was, for just the occasional "reel like your life depends on it" moment, you'd be fine without a high ratio. I must admit, I do own both 7.1:1 and a 4.6:1 baitcasters, and there isn't anything I do with them that one of my 6.2:1 baitcasters couldn't do 95% as well.

But that's just the opinion of a guy who only makes 500 casts per week, not per day.
