this is for the old timers that used to fish without the help of todays electronics, you guys think that you lost some of your skills because you are relying too much on electronics(gps and fishfinder)nowdays?i remember back in days fishing with my late father soon as we hit the water he always look for the ducks and their activities and same thing with the birds on the shoreline.just out of curiosity and not meaning to offend anybody.

What Zooker said. I never have used mine to find fish. I use it to find structure/cover/depth.

Not anymore. Bought a DVD called Electronics 101 and FINALLY have a good idea of how to use them properly now. I learned a LOT about how to use them from this DVD.

Frankly, I don't think electronics have any effect at all on "skill". Fish finders don't put them in the boat for you. And 99% of all the fish you ever catch will be ones you didn't see on the finders. I think finders are mainly good for eliminating water from your search. In that respect, all they do is allow you to fish more than before. So they may actually improve your fishing skills.

fishing changed a lot the way i see it,even the boat we are using nowdays.back then we had a 14 foot aluminum boat and camped at the back of our pickup truck, nowdays we have 22 footer fiberglass with a 225 hp engine and spend the night in a nice airconditioned motorhome with a flat screen tv.its not that im complaining here, its just a thought how things changed for the better.nowdays youre just a few click away and you get a fishing and weather report, back in the days you have to stop by at the local bait shop to get some information on whats biting.

Besides, you have to find the fish before the thing confirms they're there!
I was out last week and the at spots I thought should have fish, the finder found nothing. Then I happened on a spot and the fish finder was going crazy. Nothing, not even a bite! gosh dern gizmos!

I'll use it for structure and bottom condition and noticing schools of bait fish maybe scanning points for suspended fish but when I'm fishing I turn them off. I'm more confident using my map identifying breaks along the contour lines and maybe double checking with the unit to be sure the contour hasn't washed significantly.
I don't know if the units "ping", I think they do, Last edited by TnTom; 09-28-09 at 09:22 PM. |
