I love bass fishing but

when real bass fishing is not available I enjoy flyfishing. Anyone else here flyfish?

Nope, not me. I'm too afraid to try it because I might like it so much that I might give up spinning and casting altogether!

Some day I will try it and make my own flies and poppers.

I don't tie my own flies but you never know what will hit a fly. I have caught bass over 3 pounds on a fly. Fishing with live bait on a flyrod I have caught catfish around 3 pounds too. Bluegill are a blast on a flyrod.

I fly fish as well for bluegills right now, but next year its bass and catfish. If you do start tying flies Islandbass you will see how relaxing it is.

I tried it once, I can cast and all, but imo, the stuff we use now is better than the flies/poppers/steamers. I've only caught a few on a fly rod, but it's fun for sure!

I use to fly fish alot....even got into tying my own flies for while....its been along time since, but here lately i've had a hankerin to snag myself a new flyrod and see if I member how to cast the darn thing...hahaha.

Great forum guys. Seems to be a real cross section of experience and locale. Im from middle Tn. love bass fishing or anything else that has a hankerin to get caught.

I always take my fly rod with me and see whats in the mood. If I cant get into some Greenies, Smallies or Spots I like to take a few bluegill and troll for Strippers / Rockbass (not on the fly rod yet).

We have pretty good trout in this area so between various species of bass and trout there's never a dull moment.

I haven't got the equipment to flyfish for Stripper (need a 9wt plus) but there some guys here in this area that are real good at it so I'm hoping next spring to give it a shot.

I've had good luck in the emergent grasses with Wet Hackle Spiders, Maribou Streamers, Muddlers for top water and the always good Clouser Minnows

I have several #4 wt. & #6 wt. outfits. I have one #8 wt. outfit. I like using the #4 on bream but go with the #6 if I am expecting a mixed bag. I would love to try flyfishing for trout.

Trout are fun. Presentation gets critical. Something about standing in a creek early in the morning, quiet, mist rising from the water. I don't catch as many Trout as I wish I could but it gets better each time,not necessarily more fish just better.

There is sort of a unique correlation between flipping for bass and fly fishing for Trout. Very similar.

I did learn that a #4 wt rod when attached to a large Crappie is like medicinal. Now I keep a #6 wt with me if I'm bassing and in the boat and usually my #5wt for the Trout creeks.

Are you familiar with Guntersville? I'd really like to check it out.

If I had a second person in the boat I'd like to take some serious time on the Caney Fork. Its about 45minutes from home. BIG Trout, Browns, and Rainbows and Large Mouth and Smallies. Its a river that fishes better if one person guides the float and the other fishes, swap out. It can be waded, depending, and floated. 25miles long from Center Hill Hill dam to the Cumberland River.There is often enough current, depending, that trying to handle the drift and fishing doing both single handed is almost too much.

I grew up in Alaska and would use a fly rod when the Silvers ran but Salmon was all I fished for. Really it wasnt fly fishing in the sense that I put spawn on a hook and flung it out and then reel them in.

Still haven't caught anything over 3 lbs on a fly rod since childhood. Biggest Brown just 18" but it was good.

I started tying about 2 years ago and it really adds to the satisfaction when you get one on.

I used to fly fish for bluegills. I also drift fished with a fly rod and a muddler minnow with a split shot. Used to catch walleyes doing that.

i was slingin bugs way before i figured out what a bait caster was.. i still do go out and sling a few bugs now and again for trout.-speckled sea trout-i do get in practice by catching some brim during the summer dull-drums..

TnTom, welcome. Those central TN tailwater fisheries are great. Have you ever hit the elk below Tims Ford? Good brown trout fishing there.

I love flyfishing. It really reminds me of the sporting aspects of fishing that I think we tend to get away from when powerfishing for bass. There is a craft to catching fish on flies.

bassboss, fly fishing isnt about trying to have the most up to date realistic stuff...everyone ive ever met that fly fishes does it for the relaxation...it is more "traditional".

i have a fly rod that i got as a birthday present about 5 years ago. i have caught a good many shell crackers on it and even caught one bass about 1 1/2 lbs off the bed on it. it is def. exciting. i have hooked a couple 10+lb carp on it in the same pound, but it just ends in a lost fly. lol

Smallmouths on a flyrod are da bomb, espeically in rivers, where they seem to go airborne half the time!

Oh striper (convict bass) and stripper (a person who takes of there clothes for money) are not interchangable.

WTL thats where I caught my best Brown. Its a favorite spot for me. So nice.

We're fortunate in that there is the Elk River, and the Duck both great for Rainbows, Browns and Smallies, then the Caney Fork below Center Hill Dam which is home to some KILLER Browns and Bows (I'm still workin for mine) and Bass, and the upper Cumberland river up stream from the Cordell Hull Dam which holds some monster Stripers. I'm trying to get up to speed to take that one on. Got to get a 9-10wt though.




How about yourself do you get to this neck of the woods? Do any tying? There seems to be no limit to how creative you can get when fly fishing. These should look familiar
