Spiderwire is trash. If you want braided, go with PowerPro. You won't be disappointed.

I would never use anything smaller than 12lb. I fish near heavy cover so I rig my reels with 14 or 17 test.

Depends on the application. For crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, etc. I use 12 lb green Trilene XL.

For worms, jigs, Carolina rig and flipping I use 50 lb PowerPro braid. Very sensitive, no stretch, extremely tough and has the same diameter as 12 lb mono.

I settled on these 2 lines after MUCH trial and error.

what is a regular sized fish? here i would say a regular sized bass would be 4lbs. but areas up north might have smaller bass and have regular sized bass of 2lbs. i would use braid. powerpro is great. and as far as mono goes. stren is great. i havnt had any problems with it. also trilene is a great mono.

Tuf-Line XP Braid. I like the Mustad Thor line. I got some of the promo line and it is impressive, it should be due out on the market very soon. P N J

Bob, the main reason is that the 50 lb Powerpro is the same diameter as 12 lb mono. I'm used to 12 lb mono so there isn't any real adjustment.

20 will work fine, but if you are using it on a baitcaster it has a 6 or 8 lb mono diameter, and a baitcaster is designed for heavier (larger diameter) line. About the smallest diameter I have seen used effectively on a baitcaster is 10 pound mono.

I've also seen reports, but not recently, that occasionally 20 or 30 lb Powerpro can break on a hard hookset, but I don't know of that ever happening first hand-always "a buddy of mine...". I've never heard of that happening with the 50 lb test.

I just have the most confidence in the 50 lb.

Stren Fluorocarbon.
10 for cranks or twitch baits
17 for worms
20 for jigs
14 Stren Extra Strength mono for spinnerbaits, top water baits or anything which may require a reaction bite. I.E. Rattle-traps etc..

You'll notice after ya get the hang of using dif strength
lines that the heavier ya go on lets say a crankbait, the desired depth isn't always achieved.
Like stated before with some of our knowledgable posters, 8-10 lb line will benefit you in many ways.
The fish are less likely to feel the line, and your crankbaits will go a little deeper.
I dont go much lighter than 10 lb but when I have to flip in trash, heavy cover etc I go 14 17 or 20 lb test.
Just for sh*ts n giggles one day take the same lure out and test it on dif rods with dif pound test ratings for your line, and try to feel the dif it makes,
in my opinion many of the braided lines and spider web crap just doesn't fit into my bags of tricks, I am sure that many will swear by them, I dont like the way they wrap on the reel 8)

not sure how well known it is in your area but i have used the same brand of line for years and it is called maxima... not cheap but it performs better than anything i have ever used... super strong and has very little memory. in my book it's the best you can buy. i have also heard good things about p-line but i haven't found any reason to switch from maxima to try it yet.

I use there 20 lbs test and its PLENTY more than 20 lbs test, I'd say its closer to 40-50 pounds, I've pulled up TREES with this stuff, broken rods. The greatest benefit with this line is, use a palomar knot and you'll never lose lures with it, well maybe not never, but I can't remember the last time I lost a lure with it.
