Im going to Florida this weekend and I am taking fishing gear. I have never fished there before. I will be in the Sarasota area. Just wandering if any one is familiar with this area and if you have any tips to share for this time of year.

Depends on what kind of fishing you are gonna do, fresh or salt water?

Fish are setting up for pre spawn. rattle traps(chrome/black, chrome/blue) are real good. White spinner baits-silver blades are productive, drop shotting is always an option, green, black, green pumpkin, junebug are good colors for soft plastics.

Use spinnerbaits with double willow blades and white skirt if its clear muddy use a gold colorado blade with either white or chartreuse. Also try weightless senkos, weightless trickworms, and also try a lucky craft glass minnow and a rattletrap

The guys from fl will probably know better than me on what to use, but I can tell you for the last couple of years I've been hitting Florida for fishing in april, may, and october.
I've been fishing on the gulf side near tampa, fort meyers, and clearwater, and what I've found is any public street or sub division has a canal by it and are full of fish and alligators. If they are pre spawn I'd use what we use here, jerkbaits, rattle traps and plastics. In my experience in fishing the canals, they seem to like crome and blue on sunny days, the locals kept telling me to throw purple worms, which works about anywhere. If you go out anytime near dusk you'll get gaters coming out. I'd do most of my fishing during sunlight hours, you're not going to believe how many eyes your going to see. The bandits crankbaits work well too. I've only found lakes and canals four to seven feet so far. The walmarts are everywhere and sell a seven day fishing license for thirty bucks, and have all kinds of bass plastics for sale. Hardly any bait casters tho, everyone uses spinning gear. Try some salt fishing too, you can get frozen squid and shrimp for four bucks a bag, get a circle hook, a slip bobber and quarter ounce sinker and go find ya some salt water, the fish pull like crazy. I'd def. get a one week fishing license just to be sure. |

Fireman, go ahead and figure on me coming then. I know my brother is taking off in april sometime, not sure when, which will in turn send me on the florida trip. Gonna be me and my father. The stick marsh has been on my list since Y2k, so gotta hit that place. JB, maybe we can figure some place to meetup if you can wing it over the course of the trip and if I am down there at the same time.

If we can get it all together, absolutely. I'm just not sure when in April I can go, called my father last night and he had the crud and his brother had asked him for money so he wasn't in a florida talking mood. But maybe we can work something out, would love to fish with all of yall.

SPINNERBAITS!!
Spinnerbaits are killer this time of year, same with other fast moving bait like swim jigs or chatter baits.

Not that old..
By the way, I am definitely going to Fla. in April. I will be travelling light. I don't plan on bringing any gear. Just enough clothes for 3 or 4 days. I'll have a rental car and no hotel plans. I was thinking of setting something up so I can fish with as many members as possible. Then I'll be going to see Zook in August for a couple days. Does anybody beside Zook have Lizards(Scott) phone #?

I'm going to visit my daughter in Land-O-Lakes Florida this April....Were flying in on the 9th and staying till the 19th.....because we're flying, I'm not gonna mess with taking any tackle, but i'm still hoping I might be able to do some local fishing even if I have to buy a cheap combo from Walmart and hit some local ponds or those canals everyone talks about....lol. If any of you guys are going to be in that area, or live there and want a fishin partner during that time, make sure to speak up and we'll try to work something out, and wet a hook together if possible?
