Default Finally got my Rainbow Trout!

Well it was cold, wet, and worth it!....Me and my buddy Nate have been trying for these trouts since they started stocking in TX...Everyone that we meet at the different lakes were all getting skunked..They stocked 3200 at Samual Farms out here and we went for one last try before the Sandbass run coming up...At first,we were the only two idiots there, then more and more started showing up...We were using light spinning rigs with a 1/4 oz egg sinker, barrel swivel..Then attached a 12'' leader of 4lb test with a small double barred brim hook...We were using the Powerbait Trout ''floating bait'' to float the hooks..We also had Salmon eggs, and Philsbury cinnamon dough,haha!..
Nate caught one early on..Then about an hour later the bite just went insane!!...That Powerbait was the winner by far,The bites were so subtle, that you had to watch your tip like a hawk..We had alert bells on the rods, and the bites were so light that the bells wouldnt jingle....I missed several due to trying to set the hook like it was a 4lb bass.....So finally I would leave the rod in the rod holder and when the tip would bounce,Id pick it up keeping the line tight. And when it bounced again,I would flick my wrist back and started reeling....Didnt miss after that.
It was a blast, and in the end we both caught our limit of 5 and called it a morning...Were gonna go back and do it again this Saturday.I got mine defrosting right now and getting ready for a Trout lunch!!! (I dont think Ive ever eaten Trout, lol)

First fish of 2010,and a species Ive never caught before...Awesome day!

Awesome day, Waffle!!! You're going to love rainbow trout. It is very, very different from bass or panfish. Pink flesh with a nutty flavor. I like mine pan-fried in butter with spices.

CamG...you're from Wyoming? Where from? I lived in Casper and Riverton for a while as a kid. Did a lot of trout fishing, but never flies.

I grew up fishing and eating trout in cold water lakes of SD. Just wait until a bigger one catches on, they can fight like a big small mouth... oh and another bait that may be worth trying (as long as it is legal there) is canned sweet corn, just the normal stuff you eat with steak and potatoes type of corn. We used to catch limits in SD on corn but they outlawed it on several lakes to lower the number of fish taken

Your right I did!..haha,I left the bones in and brushed oil and spices on them inside and out. Then broiled them for 5 minutes on each side..The skin and meat just fell of the bones...I probably looked like a crack head eating them...Now I gotta hide the evidence before she gets home

Right on, WJ!!!

Hmmmph. I didn't realized it snowed in Texas. Just kidding. Power bait is usually a slam dunk for trout.

Sure wish I had some homemade inline spinners to send you.

Way to go Waffle!

I've learned from fishing for steelhead that trout fishing is definately not for fair weather fishermen!

I'd wrap those fillets in foil with some onions, garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil (and whatever other veggies you want to throw in) and stick them on the grill.

haha, thanks guys...Yea thats the record breaking snow we got last week....Its almost all gone now and getting back to 40ish and sunny!

BB- We were discussing it,and its funny how we were getting skunked on the other outings during colder days in the low 40's ...But here it is snowing and in the 30 range and they were active as hell.....A lesson learned....I wonder how it will be this Saturday?

Not from Wyoming, but Nebraska. I've just spent my fair share of time in Wyoming. Beautiful country!

Brookies are like trout nuggets!

I remember when I was 12 or so, going up to Bates Creek, near Casper, WY and catching huge stringers of Brook Trout. We did practice catch and release though....right into Lake Crisco.....delicious!!

Well if I was on a light rod it would have been more fun...but using a MH you get a few where your reeling in and you cock your head to the side and ask yourself ''is he still there?''..lol...For the most part they just came right in.

Even the little guys are fun on an UL or even a flyrod. And when you hook a big one, it's a blast.
