The ol bait monkey is trying to make me buy a new depth finder.
Its between the lowrance hds 5 with side imaging or humminbird 798 with structure scan. What would you guys recommend and why. Just want some input before I drop a grand on a new unit. Thanks in advance guys.

I'd go with the Hummingbird.
It's much cheaper than the HDS because you don't have to buy the SI seperate. Also, Lowrance's customer service isn't the best if something were to happen. BB

You know , Ive seen bad remarks about Humminbird as well. I too have been studying , as Im between an HDS7 or a 989. Im not in a big hurry though. Id like to give it another year , and see what happens with each product since theres some competition now.

Humminbird hands down. I had a 797si on the Ranger I just traded in and it was awesome. Not saying that the Lowrance isn't a good unit but Lowrance has the most pathetic customer service I have ever dealt with. They are really good at not returning calls when they tell you they will, and in my experience getting any help at all from them is near impossible. The only bright spot with Lowrance customer service was Linda Colt. She was as hard working as they come when it comes to taking care of her customers. Being from the Tulsa area she was always making trips to the lakes around here to give her replacement parts or help when needed. She was just awesome and was honestly the only good part of the customer service part of Lowrance. They strongarmed her out of the company in a manner that would have involved lawyers had I been her. And now that she is gone I wouldn't buy anything from them because I have a feeling that the first issue that you have you will probably have all kinds of problems getting any help whether it be warrantied or not.
On the flip side I had a transducer go bad on my Humminbird 2 days before a tournament and I needed it replaced in a bad way. I called and explained the situation to Humminbirds customer service department and the very next day I got my transducer at no charge with a note wishing me good luck in my tournament. I have all the faith in the world in Humminbird and their customer service and in my experience their product will outlast Lowrance units by a long ways. Good luck with whichever route you go.

I have always use lowrance and since I started looking at si units I've herd countless bad things about there customer service. That's why I started looking into humminbird.
I like things about both units but I would be pissed if it broke and took months to fix. Bama, why do you recommend the lowrance?
