Default Dr.G and Garry2R's weekend Pike hunters

Back in March I wrote about my experiments with knotless leaders and my intention to use them for Bass, Pike and Musky this year. The technology is well proven and was borrowed from west-coast saltwater fishermen.

Details can be found in the BLOG section...but in short, a Mono. or Fluoro. leader is threaded inside of Hollow Braided line and joined to the running line using a knotless loop-to-loop connection.

The leader is held in place by the "finger-trap" action of the hollow braid. A small flat winding, like those used to hold the guides on a rod, secures the two interlaced lines so that there is no slippage when the line/leader is slack.

While I was visiting you-guys "down south" I got talking to Dr. G, on this board. He is also from Ontario. This was a holiday weekend in Canada and the Dr. and I hooked up for some Pike fishing.

Here's Dr. G with our catch...

These were both 10 pounders. One hit a Sebile Magic Swimmer and the other a medium diving Kopper Live Target Perch. Both were caught using 50 pound mono leaders. The 50# was insurance against bite offs and being knotless, we could wind them right onto the casting reels for easy casting.

The 50# proved to be a little too buoyant for shallow running, small billed, baits like the Rapala Husky Jerk. For these type of baits I have now switched to Fluorocarbon.

They were both about 3 foot. The amazing thing is that Garry hooked them both in a cove that was full of docks and cottagers. You expect Pike that size to be in slightly wilder locales but you never know.
