Made it down here over the weekend driving a 24' box truck towing a car hauler with my dad following me in my pickup towing the boat. It took almost 25 hours to drive down but we made it. I think I had the truck a little overloaded since going up a hill in Covington, KY my max speed was 35 with floored and I got passed by a guy on a scooter! Average was 7 MPG in the big truck and 13 in the Chevy, a pretty penny in fuel costs.
I just got the internet hooked up in the house. Headed out tomorrow to get a license since I tried today but the machine was down due to updating for the new year. If anybody wants to get out and fish or has some east central Mississippi tips please let me know! I could use them since I've only caught one largemouth so far this year. |

You know, they say riding a scooter is a lot like being with a fat chick. It's fun till your friends see you.....
Glad you made it, Bender. I got nothin' for advice over there, but www.mdwfp.com and http://mississippigameandfish.com/ should help some. Let me know when/if you decide to come over this way.

Welcome to Mississippi Bender. You came just in time if you were planning on losing some weight. The heat is up and the humidity is just as high.

It is warm but I don't mind it yet. I've just been hopping from A/C to A/C!
So far it has been 100x easier to get a driver's license here and they print them on the spot. It hasn't been as easy to get a fishing license though since the tackle shop's machine is still down. I am near the cutoff for hunter's ed but maybe they will accept my certificate from New York for that. I need to get that done so I can get out on the water soon. |

I will go there today. I might also stop by the regional office of Fish and Wildlife since it is on my way into town. I don't understand some of the license fees listed in this PDF. Is it a separate $102 fee for fishing and boating on the state lakes? That seems pretty high just to use a boat ramp and only covers a few lakes in the state.

Yes...all of the state lakes charge a fee for launching a boat, which includes a fishing permit for everybody in the boat. So either pay the $7 each trip, or $102 for the year. I've only been to a few state lakes, so I never bothered with the annual permit. If you plan on making 15 trips or more per year to state lakes, then the annual permit is better.

I don't know if the annual state lake charge covers a partner either. It is an extra $5 for each person in the boat over 16.
