Those engines are just amazing works of art. The headers (at least the ones I know directly) are Inconel. The old place I worked sold a tube bender to Toyota's F1 team when they were getting started. Unfortunately it was right when I started work there in 2001 and I didn't get to go to Germany for the installation. That's O.K. though since I have experience bending Inconel in aircraft companies and it is a B$#% to work with. I even had a piece of that tubing kicking around for a while, I think it was 0.021" wall 3" or 3.5" O.D.
I stopped following F1 a few years ago but when I did it was just sickening the amount of money and technology involved. I believe Toyota's F1 budget was around $450,000,000.00 and Ferrari's was higher! And that is just for 2 cars on the track at a time!!! |

CMorg, If you liked that video(which I did too)then you might like this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO0PgyPWE3o&feature=fvst Bender, I'm pretty sure your right about those headers being made from Inconel....I couldn't remember what that stuff was called....lol. Like you, i'm amazed at how technologically advanced those engines are......To twist it to almost 19,000 revs per minute and not blow up during a race, is mind blowing....they make awesome horsepower yet get amazing fuel mileage.....But the whole F1 series has gotten so far outta control in terms of cost its unreal....Actually stupid if you want my real opinion. They may still be the elite racing series in the world, but they don't have near the fan base they used to have, and personally, I think the older F1 cars were alot more fun to watch. |
