Another prayer request.

Some very good friends of my wife and I, a couple named David and Chelcie, are going through a pretty rough time right now. Chelcie is pregnant, and everything up until Tuesday was perfect, when she went in for a regular ultrasound checkup. They saw a couple of things that worried them, so she went back Wednesday for an MRI. They discovered that the baby has 3 separate conditions, 2 not so bad and 1 that could be bad, or maybe not...
First, the baby has clubbed feet. Not sure of the severity, but they can fix that with therapy, braces, and maybe minor surgery. She also has bilateral pylectosis, which is a swelling of part of the kidneys. They say this will usually resolve itself after birth, so they'll just keep an eye on it, but it's not something to really worry about.
The big one is something called "agenesis of the corpus collasum." The corpus collasum is the bridge between the two lobes of the brain, with 200-250 million connections that let the two hemispheres communicate with each other. "Agenesis" means that this structure either did not develop at all, or just not as much as it should. This means there will most likely be some level of mental retardation, but there's no telling how severe. She could grow up to lead an almost perfectly normal life, with maybe just some delays in learning to crawl, walk, talk, etc, difficulties in complex problem solving and social interactions, and other fairly minor things. Or, she could have some significant retardation...they won't know for years how bad. There's also a chance that she might have some kind of syndrome. There's a whole list of them associated with this...they're doing an amniocentesis (sp?) today to determine if she does have a syndrome, and it usually takes about a week to get the results.
I'd appreciate all the prayers you can give, both for the baby and for her parents. They're in the "Why me?" stage now, but hopefully they'll be able to accept it and learn how to deal with it soon. Thanks, everybody.

Daniel I just read this to Britney, well I read half of it and the last half I was somehow able to stumble through with this huge lump in my throat. Britney and I are both misty eyed right now and I think we both need to go into Lakes room and watch him sleep for a little bit. I am sure as new parents too, you and Louann probably have the same numb feeling that Britney and I have. I have always hated to see kids who were sick and when something really bad happened to kids it always bothered me. But for the last 9 months I find this kind of thing bothering me more and more. Believe me that Britney and I will pray long and hard for David and Chelcie as well as their baby. God is good, let's all remember that and pray for them to welcome a perfectly healthy baby girl into the world.

Ok, they just got their results back from the amniocentesis...the baby tested negative for all syndromes. It looks like she just has 3 separate and unrelated conditions, which is really the best outcome at this point.

Ok, I'm resurrecting this old post to say that they are going to induce her labor tomorrow, so I should have a new "niece" tomorrow sometime, hopefully. Labor and delivery should go just like normal...the conditions she has shouldn't affect that at all.
So if you would, say a few more prayers for them. Thanks, everybody.

Ok, Mackenzie was born last night at 11:51 pm, 6 pounds 3 ounces. She's doing ok, not great, but ok. They had to take her to the NICU (neo-natal intensive care unit) because she wasn't breathing great and her oxygen saturation was low, but I don't think they're too worried about her...they're just being really cautious.
Thanks for the prayers, guys. It's helping still.

Well as worried as I am sure they are, I still want to say congratulations to the parents. It sounds like things turned out much better than they could have based on the results the parents got a few months back. We will keep up the prayers and keep us posted as things tend to unfold.

I hate typing this...they got some rough news today about little Mackenzie. I don't know all the details yet, but I do know that it is very serious news, and it will stay with this little girl the rest of her life. I'll post again when I know more.
