Default INTERESTING morning out on the lake

This morning was probably the most interesting outing I've ever been on (besides that time I got two out of three barbs on a treble stuck in the bottom of my foot).
So, this morning around 5 o'clock I decided to take the boat out on the lake.. A fair sized lake for a jon boat and trolling motor. Under the complete darkness I started throwing a black jitterbug. Nothing. Then I switched to a Zara Spook when the sky started turning grey. Nothing. Buzzbait. Nothing. I finally saw some action around a thick bed of lily pads and tried a Zoom Frog. Not even a strike.
Finally, in frustration I moved to the other side of the lake to a large cove. Throwing a Junebug Fluke around weeds, lily pads and piers, no results were yielded. BUT, I saw one little shad jump out of the water being chased in open water. As soon as my fluke hit the water, a largemouth slammed it. Ended up being 4.5 lbs. So, I paid attention to the water and saw some more scattered shad jumping. Next cast, another hit. It felt bigger than the first, but that's because it WAS bigger. 8 lb channel cat. I kept fishing for another hour and caught one white perch, one bluegill(not even the length of the 5 in fluke), a jackfish, and a couple dinks hitting a t-rigged lizard.

Bizarre?

Sounds like the fish are in a typical summer pattern down there. Chasing shad and constantly on the move, just suspending in different places during the course of the day. They're definitely hard to catch this time of year. But you did the right thing, found some shad and fished that area. If you can do that you're definitely improving your chances of catching them in the summertime. Congrats on the one biggun, wish I could find some like that!!

Sounds like you caught them on a feeding frenzy!..Its fun when you catch them in action chasing and filling up on schools of baitfish...Ive had a few days where if you cast into the schools of baitfish the bass will almost always hit it.
Ive also fished what I thought was a feeding frenzy, but it was actually shad spawning...Heres a thread with pics on it....Nuts!
