The discussion in the earlier thread entitled "LINE" reached a point where I began to wonder what part of the bass' mouth gets hooked most of the time. To tell the truth, I've never paid that much attention when de-hooking a bass, but I have a feeling the hooked location depends on a number of factors -- the type of bait, size of the fish, the angle from which he attacks the bait, the timing of the angler's reaction, etc, etc.
I'm not enough of a fish anatomist to know the correct name for the various areas within a bass' mouth, but perhaps some of you are. In any case, it would be interesting to read where the hook seems to most frequently end up in the fish you catch. I do know that I've caught a couple of bass while fly fishing and had the popper literally fall out of his mouth just as I grabbed him. Not sure what that indicates, other than being lucky (or maybe dumb for using a 4# leader, but I was really fishing for bluegill). As can be seen from watching films of bass feeding and striking varioius lures, when the fish takes the bait, a lot happens within the fishes' mouth in an incredibly short time interval. This makes me think that the location of the hookset could be totally random. Let's have some other opinions, please. .
