I have been, in the past few weeks, trying out alternative baits for panfishing. I have always used worms, but I want something that I can keep in my bag, and not have a big disgusting mess every time I go fishing. I have tried corn, bread, grubs/jigs, and a number of berkley power baits.
Today I tried Berkley Gulp Maggots. I like these because they stand up to more than one fish, and are not messy, and oh yeah, they catch fish! The Crappie Nibbles I used before these are very delicate, and often fall off the hook before a fish even bites. The fish seemed to like them a lot, but the maggots seem to be even better. I just got home from about 20 minutes of fishing. It was too hot to stay out any longer, but I caught a whole mess of B-gills and only had to reload a few times. I will surely keep a jar of these in my bag at all times. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Sweet! They have corn niblets too, but I have not seen them around here. I might try ordering some. But I love the maggots so far! I have been using the chartreuse ones, and I may try the natural color.

A neighbor let me watch a couple of fishing videos he picked up at a garage sale recently.....They are from the In-Fisherman series, and one was all about panfish and the other was about crappie......I watched them several times, and enjoyed them both alot, and learned several new things.....One of the baits they used alot of was the Gulp series, and the maggots seemed to be a favorite, along with one that looked just like a real minnow....they would rig them onto regular crappie jigs or as trailers on a Beetlespin style lure and they swore it increased their catch rate.....I plan on pickin up a jar of each to try for myself....We've got some monster panfish in the waters I frequent, and I don't mind puttin away the bass gear and goin after them guys at all.

if they like those, may be worth trying the cheapest hot dogs you can find, cut up in small slices and fourths... There are a few places locally where (as long as the bite is on) I can pull in anywhere from 20-40 bluegill, and usually 5-10 of them are 10-12"... may be worth trying at least.

Berkley Powerbait Power Wigglers work great too! They are just like the gulp but cheaper like $3. You get 75 too!
