Default Duck Ammo

Im going on my first duck hunt this weekend and was wandering about ammo. i have a few boxes of steel shot but they are more for quail and dove, they have an even ounce of shot in them, will they get the job done? thanks for any and all help. by the way the ammo is winchester steel game and target loads.

I imagine quail/dove loads will be at least size 6 shot, maybe even size 9. You don't need to use those for duck. You probably want size 3-5 shot.

When I hunted duck, we had to either use steele or bismuth, and I believe I used either B or BB for the shot size, always shot mags. Steele shot just does not have the penetration power of lead....

With steel shot 2 is the most common size for mallards, no smaller than 4. BB is a little overkill, but it'll get the job done.

I hunted ditch banks for ducks for many years. I had to use steel here in Indiana, and went with 2 3/4 high brass #2 shot most of the time. I was mainly shooting mallards and an occational pintail. If I knew I was going to be hunting woodies, I'd opt for #4 shot.
