Default rod building for dummies

Yep, I admit I am the dummy in this case.
All of the discussions on chat lately have me considering making a rod.
I figured this would be easier then me trying to write down the chat discussions.

I am not sure that I will enjoy doing it so I don't want to go all out in buying stuff that I won't use.
So, what are the basics that I need to accomplish this, assuming an error factor when I screw it up that is. I know that I can save money buying in bulk, but I already have a garage full of stuff I don't use so I am looking for the minimum things needed.

My goal is to have an 8' rod with a 20" grip that can throw 6-8oz baits.

Thanks guys.
