Is it possible to catch a lot of bass on a spincasting reel. Thats the only thing I use. Haven't had much luck lately. Does anybody else use a spincasting reel? Any tips or suggestions????

how is it not possible ??? its not the reel that catches the fish, it is the lure. i wouldnt worry about your reel, if you arnt catching anything, it has something to do with the water you fish, or the lure your using. if its all you got, then make due. it is fine, i personally dont like them just because they are not open. i like spinning reels. but spincasters are fine. worry about your bait, not your reel. 8)

It sure is-matter of fact if you took a poll most of us started using a spincast reel. 02 has a point-the lure you are using is the key. Give us a little info about where you fish-weeds, flooded timber, lilly pads, etc. and we can point you in the right direction.

If you ain't catching fish, it's 'cause you're fishing where they ain't. Not because of the reel you use.

I use spincast, spinning and baitcast reels. There are disadvantages to using spincast and the cheaper the reel, the more troublesome. Like any reel, the basics you should look for are:
1. ratio of 3.5:1 or better and a larger spool size. You need to be able to take in more line with every revolution of the reel handle. 2. smooth drag 3. anti-reverse switch - most spincasts have lousy drags and backreeling can avoid many break offs (unless wrapped in heavy cover) 4. ceramic line pick-up or one with a roller (Daiwa) - metal ones will groove and catch line on the cast. Realize the limitations of spincast: 1. limited to lighter lures (less than 1/2 oz.) 2. limited to plastic lines (mono and flourocarbon versus braid) for castability. 3. limited to 8 lb. test for the same reason. 4. best used with shorter and lighter action rods (6' max) because of multiple friction points starting with the spool edge and cap hole. A spincast is as capable of handling a 5 lb fish as it is panfish, but all of the requirements mentioned must be met. A cast lure has nothing to do with the reel, just the angler casting it. Sam |
