I have several rods that I really like that I dislike the keeper on, or they don't have one, and I hate the 'rubber ring' style keepers. I would like to install the 'drop style?' keepers like this one: http://www.shofftackle.com/drop-style-hookkeepers.html
on these rods, so I am looking for advice on doing so. I had a St Croix Mojo Bass rod that had one, and I still have a Bass Pro custome that has one of this style, and I really like them. A few of the rods I have are pretty expensive by my standards, (St Croix Avids) and I was wanting to remove the standard eye ring style(?) keepers and install the drop style myself, but I would leave the old ones on there if removing them is something that it is easy to screw up your rod if you do..... I was hoping that it would be as simple as marking the locations, putting the thread wrap over the end of the keeper, and then sealing the thread with the appropriate material, just looking for some advice on doing this. Thanks! |

Order this free catalog (get the one for beginners) It will be a catalog for everything you need and it comes with a "how to" section on everything. I ordered one and its great for anyone thinking about making there own rods and reels. The link is http://www.mudhole.com/Get-a-Free-Catalog

Removing wraps is very easy to do. Take a lighter and heat the finish over the wraps you want to remove. DO NOT overheat it, just get it toasty. From there, take a sharp razor blade and and with the blade perpendicular to the blank start to cut the finish (it's the same technique as using a razor blade to scrape off a sticker from a piece of glass). From there you should be able to peel the whole wrap off. Clean the area with some denatured alcohol and then wrap your new hook keeper on and finish it with some flexcoat or D2 Diamond finish (www.acidrod.com).
One thing to remember with finish, is that if you are trying to keep the color of the thread, you have to put color preserver on first because if you put finish directly on the threads they will become translucent. A lot of factory rods are finished w/o color preserver so if you are trying to match the other wraps you won't need it. Also, black thread doesn't need color preserver, and in fact, it will make the black turn more of a gray color. Just put the finish directly on the black threads. |
