my son wants a rod for cranking and is looking at the powell 804 is this a good rod for shallow and mid depth crainkbaits? Or should he get another model in the endurance series?

That would be an 8' MH rod? IMO way too much rod for shallow or mid-depth cranks. Suitable probably for deep divers, but for the ones mentioned you'll do better with a medium power in 6'6" to 7'6" length with a moderate or moderate/fast action.

That's a 7' medium. That power and length would be more in the ballpark. But I don't know a lot about Loomis rods, I've only had a couple and none of their crankbait rods or any in the GL series. If he likes the GL2 than that would work. As I said in previous posts, I'm not of the opinion that you need to spend a lot of money on rods used for moving baits with treble hooks, in comparison to slow presentation baits, the requirements for a really sensitive (= more expensive) blank is not as critical.
