![]() Scott, what aspect of fishing are you writing about? What kind of essay is it supposed to be? I'd highly suggest you pick a specific thing about fishing and write about it. If you can chose the type of essay, you could write... say an instructional essay on how to fish your favorite lure, a persuasive essay on why you think someone should learn to fish, or more of a research paper on something scientific about fishing like the health or history of a local fishery. I did a college research paper on the effects of invasive species such as the goby, zebramussel, etc. on the smallmouth fishery in Lake Erie. While I'm not an English major, I am fairly good at writing and did very well. My point is, writing about fishing in general may lead to an essay filled with a lot, but lacking in a specific purpose. From there, you can find some quotes that are relative to your topic. BB

Well first off, at least you are in school and taking a class, and therefore have the opportunity to improve your writing skills. It is absolutely a learned skill, but like anything, some folks are naturally more gifted than others at it. Work on being better whether you are or not.
I really agree with Bigbassin, picking something specific is important. I would probably make it a more philosophical paper, extolling the positives of going fishing. Finding quotes that fit your paper will be a little easier then, and trite phrases, like 'a bad day on the lake is better than a good day at the office' can fit in well. Discussing the excitement of catching a big fish in your paper can be accented by well known 'quotes' like; 'nothing make a fish bigger than ALMOST catching it'. Also, in a paper covering the positives of fishing in general, you can even throw in a quick comment of the economics of fishing, i.e. you don't need a lot of money to get started, but a boat can take fishing to another level, and then you can use tried and true quips such as, 'a boat is nothing but a hole in the water to throw money into'. I hope this gives you some decent ideas, and maybe even a few usable quotes. Communication is the absolute most important thing setting us aside from those less civilized, and I would encourage you to become better at it, and yes, ask your teacher for help and guidance as you are writing your paper! As an aside, developing a good vocabulary is key to becoming a decent writer, so if there are any words you aren't SURE of the meaning of in this (or others posts) look them up, and try and learn and remember them. Good luck! |
