Default I can't even make this up!

So I'm guessing the county isn't responsible for plowing beyond that point?
The sad thing is, I've heard that it costs the taxpayers a couple hundred bucks, every time a road sign goes up.

I saw a sign today I should have taken a photo of. It was at the exit from a Travel Center truck stop. It read as follows.

Trucks only turn left
Cars only turn left
All others turn right

It had me wondering two things. Who is really supposed to be the only vehicle to turn left. And who is supposed to turn right? An Amish buggy?

This was a sign in a church:

"For those of you who have children and don't know it,
there is child care available in the basement."

The English language, depending on how words is chockful of potential to make some crazy sentences and phrases!

Capt. is that a real photo?

We have watershed signs here in tennessee that serve no purpose other than cost huge sums of money and tell you which body of water you are closest to at the moment.

We have a sign similar to that at Dozier's Boat Dock in the mouth of the Harpeth river as it meets the Scumberland (yes I checked my spelling)

I know you do!

John, I heard it costs like 200 bucks to put up a road sign. I'm assuming that's the price of the metal rectangle....and paint....and pole....mounting hardware....and the labor to dig a hole and fill the dirt back in....yada yada yada.

Do you have any real info on how much it actually costs to install a road sign?

i'll check on it mike. $200.00 per sign sounds about right just off the top of my head. figure on where oyu live how much the 2 employees make per hour. then add the cost of the post, sign itself (which is ordered, no making it up in house), then gas for truck and so forth.
i DO know there is a new federal law that comes into play in the coming year or 2 that states that ALL signs now have to be made up of HIGHLY refelcted paint or tape. which means all old street markers, street signs have to be replaced. reason is for night time, oyu can't read most old signs at night real good. the new ones seem to GLOW in the dark. and the vests we now use are the "glow in the dark" neon green. orange is no longer up to code.
i haven't done this, but look up how many road workers are killed from drivers while working ont he road. bet there are a lot more than you would think.
yes i work for a city road dept. but our "leader" doesn't care anymore. he has till sept for his "tenour" and he is retiring. i have been here for 6 years. not ONCE have we had a safety meeting of ANY kind. not once has there been a flagging (where oyu go through a class on how to flag traffic) course. and we NEVER have enough people out helping with traffic while doing road work. he is lucky that no one has gotten hurt nor killed. small town yes, but still.............ya'll know what i mean.
i am VERY careful gang. i never take chances. i just pray we get a leader who cares. and i even brought it up to the main man, he jsut said we were too small and it costs too much. i told him he better hope i never get hurt. cuz there was not enough money to pay me afterwards.and yes he would be in the lawsuit. guess that's another reason i am on the crap list huh? hahaha!
which brings me to this gang. i know our police and firefighters are underpaid. and i am not disputting their need for more pay for the hazzardous work they do. but road workers face a lot fo the same dangers. a small car is a deadly thing when going jsut 30 mph when oyu are standing on the road as it passes by you. normally it passes within 2 feet of your body. that driver makes one wrong move, oyu are hit. o bear this in mind when you see some workers on YOUR road.

Hey at least Alabama doesn't make it's road crew wear the leg chains any more.

I hear ya John. A lot of drivers don't respect those along the side of the road, whether it's a road crew of someone changing a tire. It's doesn't take a lot of common sense to slow down and give as wide a margin when going by as possible. Cripes, how much time do you loose by slowing down as a courtesy? Everyone today is in such a hurry to get (usually) nowhere (important).

When I blew the trailer tire on I-40 comming home from Wheeler, Doc had to stand behind the trailer at the side of the road waving at traffic. Of course the tire was on the left side of the trailer, so I was exposed to traffic going by at 70+ MPH. The gust from the big trucks was enough I couldn't keep my hat on. I was over as far as I could get, yet still only about 3' from the traffic going by, you think anyone even tried to move over a lane or SLOW DOWN?

Slowing down on a two lane road is only common sense. Here in PA, on multi-lane highways it's required that traffic move over a lane (if possible, always a loophole) or SLOW DOWN - I think a lot of drivers think dropping to 55 from 70 IS slowing down - for
disabled vehicles, police during a traffic stop, or ROAD CREWS. It's law now, don't know what the fine is, but at least the attempt has been made to legislate some traffic safety regarding vehicles or crews stopped on the side of the road.

The sad truth is though - you can pass all the laws you want but some people just don't give a sh*t and have a total disregard for anyone except themselves. Respect for others (or even property both public and private) just doesn't seem as prevelent as it once was and seems to deteriorate with each generation. It seems the more our population grows the bigger the disconnect between individuals grows. Oh, well that's a discussion for another day.

I do hope you stay ever vigiliant John and things get better when your dumbarse crew leader (or what-ever-the-fu*K his title is) retires. Hopefully someone with a better sense of responsibility will replace him. YOU have my vote! Safety in the work place should be a very high priority, regardless of the type of work being done.

Where I worked, safety meeting were held for the outside work crews MONTHLY. Inside personell had meetings twice a year, with a building walk down each month. Safety codes were established, and violations were considered serious. Infractions could cost an employee anything from a day off to termination. Safety was considered a serious issue, and it's a shame all industry does not consider it so. Accidents still happened, but the rate (and degree of seriousness) did decrease annually, and significanly over a 10 year span, after the company got real serious about it. So keep after them John, no department is too small to consider the safety of those working in it.

i MAY be wrong here, but i THINK this goes for every road in the U.S.A. bruce. if there is road construction, the STANDARD speed limit is 25 mph. now this is UNLESS it is posted otherwise. and now in ALABAMA, if there is a broken down car or if a officer has someone pulled over on the highway (4 lane) OYU must GET IN THE LEFT LANE. leaving the right lane clear. if oyu don't and the officer is in his car.....YOU can be given a citation or ticket.
and bruce, when i worked for the ocunty, we had the once a month safety meetings, videos and classes. we even had to be certified in in CPR. as i get older adn look at everything that i did as a younger fella, i have grown to covet all those safety precautions i was MADE to do then. if it weren't for them, i may not even be here today. adn now, i watch some of these young fellas i work with and see where they are making mistakes that COULD take their life. i tell them and they jsut laugh at me. i hang my head, shaking it and tell them........."one day oyu will see......i hope".
