What did I catch?
I was fishing a drainage collection pool that is fed from 3 streams into a series of large ponds and this guy hit my 4inch Senko. From doing a bit of research it looks like a Green Sunfish in the body coloration and spotting, but it has the red eye and mouth of a Warmouth since it took my whole 4 inch senko. My question is, is a crossbreed possible between these 2 and if so how uncommon are they?

I am thinking it is just a warmouth or gargleye as we used to call them.

Doesn't look like a cross, just a Warmouth or "rock bass"(notice the rocks in your photo) as the locals call them. Because of their attitude and mouth size they're a frequent by-catch around here.
**note...because of their bulk/shape they make an excellent live bait for trophy bass**** (if you're into that sort of thing)

Rock bass, coloration somewhat dependent upon water coloration and or quality, and considered a sport fish in many states thus not legal to use for bait in many states.
My biggest almost measured a legal 12 in for bass in wva and was going to take it in and argue it twas a smallmouth cross if it had touched. |

Rock bass.
Catch them suckers all the time. They'll put up a good fight in the river's current, they'll make ya think you've got another smallmouth on until you see em! lol They'll eat 3.5" tubes and 8" worms like nothin else!

Green sunfish. They have lots of different nicknames but that is for sure a green sunfish.

The orange tips on the fins, large mouth, bulky physique, and greenish spots tell me it's a green sunfish.
It's possible that it's got some warmouth in there somewhere... |

Very often even the experts can't tell the difference. It's generally acknowledged that Warmouth have bigger mouths, thus my vote for warmouth.
Here's an interesting thread and debate among some guys that should know............ http://forums.pondboss.com/ubbthread...&Number=124935

Yeah....all signs pointed me to Green Sunfish except for the HUGE mouth and the Red Eyes. I ran into a park ranger while fishing again and even he said it looked like a combo between a Warmouth and a Green Sunfish. I'm happy either way as it is the first of either/both species I have caught and the fact that it was on a 3/0 hook and a 4 inch senko made it even more memorable.
