The groove should have a rubber gasket in it that keeps the braid from slipping. It's supposed to not need backing.

I would probably buy a 330yd spool of the cheapest mono you can find, spool it completely and then add your braid to top it off. Are you planning on bass fishing with a giant salt water reel?

For shark fishing, I think I would go straight to the spool with the braid. I have caught some descent sized shark and they will def. pull some line off of your reel. I have never found another fish that will put up the same fight pound for pound as a shark, they do not have any quit in them.

30# braid, so not going for "big" shark so I'd think backing it would be fine. 300 yds. of braid should be plenty and as you're not going after 100 pound beasts I would put a wrap of electrical tape over the backing so the braid does not dig into it. I've caught shark over 100# offshore with conventional tackle and didn't need 300 yds of line, but it was heavier 80# mono.
