I don't about you all, but I thoroughly enjoy watching the Olympics! However, it seems they have added some ridiculous sports (at least IMO), why is it twirling a ribbon, dancing with a hula hoop or a ball, mountain bike racing, etc a sport? Yet we don't see very many sports that appeal to the outdoors person, of course we have archery and trap, but what about bass fishing? Or saltwater fishing? Or lumber jack sports? Or bird dog competitions? These are all sports and if every country doesn't participate eventually they'd catch on!
I get it, the previous ones I've posted take skill, talent and patience, but so do the others I mentioned. I wish I knew what ran through the IOC's head and decision making process as to what sports to include and which ones not to. Yeah this is a pointless post and me just ranting. Surely I'm not the only that thinks this, am I? |

I've really enjoyed watching the Olympics this year. It's cool to me to watch some of the weird stuff that I wouldn't see any other time. I don't have too much problem with any of the sports that have definitive scoring. The thing I don't really like are the ones that have judging. It's so arbitrary sometimes, the scoring differs from judge to judge, how can that be fair? It's hard to tell if one persons 10 trampoline flips were better than another persons or one diver made a little less splash than another. There are several events that I think could be done away with.
That said, it is amazing to see these athletes push the limits of what the human body is capable of. The time and dedication they put into perfecting their craft is crazy. I wonder what some of them do once their careers are over. They've spent their entire lives learning how to swing from 2 rings tied to ropes and now at 23 yrs old, their careers are over, what do they do now? I also hate that you can't watch any events in the evening without already knowing who won. If you listen to the radio or get online, you're going to see what happened during the day, it takes some of the fun out of it.

My main deciding factor on whether something is a sport is weather whether or not the event is judged. For example in Tack and Feild, you've got 8 guys running to a finish line, the first one who crossed wins. But in something like diving, where the event is judged, you could take 5 divers, and 20 different judges and you wouldn't have the same winner every time.
And why is water polo in the olymics when baseball and football aren't!? I mean seriously... who watched water polo, other than during the Olympics?!

The other Olympic issue is, the sports are selected from worldwide. While we may not pay much attention to certain sports, other countries are apechit over it - water polo is one of those. I don't particulary enjoy BMX racing, but someone must like it. And don't get me started on badmitton.................. |

I got a lot of enjoyment out of watching this time. Sure, there are events that hold no appeal for me, but there are plenty that do.
The men's volleyball final between Russia and Brazil was one for the ages. Glad I tuned in in to see it.

Here's Bernie Schultz' red hot opinion regarding the Olympics and NBS's coverage.
