Default My report for the day...

My two youngest started school today and my oldest and I were sitting around the house. So I told her lets go grab some minnows and go see if we can catch something. We get out to the lake and darn near every hole that is accessible by shore is taken, so we go out on the dock that is there. Getting the daughter set up on a minnow and I start slinging a crankbait. Nothing for either one of us, then I notice one of the holes I wanted was open so we pack up real quick and haul butt over there.

I get the daughter situated in the new spot and tie on a 1/2 oz jig with a green pumpkin pit boss for a trailer. Start flipping it around some lilies and nothing. I thought, "great it's going to another one of those trips out to this d@mn hole; why do I even bother to come out here!" The daughter needs reset, so I get her line in throwing another minnow on for her and cast the opposite direction.

So I start flinging my jig around where I initially had my daughter set up. I make a cast towards a hole between the shore and some lilies. Start my bouncing my jig around (there's a lot of rocks in this area), hit a rock, then another. Then I thought a felt a thump, thought, "nah, it's just a rock", then...thump, thump, thump...hook set and holy crap I thought I was hung up. All of the sudden my line started heading for deeper water.

Then I saw the bucket break the surface of the water...here's what was on the end of my line.

We moved again and my daughter finally got her one, but she wouldn't hold it to get a pic with it.

I was happy with my one

Nice fish, I bet that thing weighed considerably more about 5 or 6 months ago. Glad your daughter got to see you catch a big one

Thanks guys, I was pretty shocked at the size of this one. I haven't seen a bass that big come out of this little hole.

The record for the lake is 14lbs and some change, but the Marine who caught it paid like to 2K in fines to keep it vice taking measurements and have a mount made.

Joe- I don't know if it would have been any bigger 5-6 months ago. This lake is actually a reservoir and they literally dropped a dredger in there right about the time spawn should have started. There are a lot dinks in there though, so the fish may have been successful.

I really need to invest in a scale.

Thats a heck of a nice bass! I would have loved to see your daughters expression when you lifted it out of the water.

Thanks Keith; her expression is priceless every time I pull up a decent bass. She gets big eyed and her mouth drops open usually followed by something to the effect of, "holy cow dad that is a big fish!"

Shane great fish!
Even better that your daughter was with.
Next time see if she wants to toss a jig. Kids love to cast and retrieve plus just imagine......her face when that kind of fish comes off the end of her line. BYE, BYE minnows!

Actually popping a jig to remove vegetation is pretty easy for kids to learn. My 8 year old grandson and 11 year old grandaughter actually do well on jigs. Thier only throwing 1/4 ozs. so if brought in 'fast' it works like a swimjig or spinbait. They also love throwing plastic worms. And when that popping results in a 'whopper bite like what happened to you....PURE JOY!
Plus where I'm from, as many bites come off of 'popping' thru vegatation you almost look forward to it.

Thanks for the share.

Capt Mike, BB, & Dave- Thank you...

JD- My daughter needs to learn patience. Once (if) I can figure out the bite, I'll immediately switch her over to what what I'm on, show her where/what she needs to target when casting, how to work the bait, what to expect to feel, etc.

For instance when I put her on a DS one time she was doing good for about 10 mins then I see her out of my peripheral vision jerking on the darn thing like she's hung up. I asked her if she was and says [in pre-teen tone], "nope this [drop shotting] is just boring." I said, "sorry hun, but that's what their biting one, I'll put you back on a crank or spinner bait if you want." Naturally the answer was ok...

I don't get it, she loves to fish and always says yes when I ask her if she wants to go or come to me and ask me if I'll take her. Either she'll quit going or listen and apply what I teach her and start catching more fish. I love her to death and darn sure don't want to lose my fishing buddy.

Thats why they love jigging and worming (texas worming) cause they are always reeling or hopping or popping...there's always activity. Actually catching a fish becomes secondary to them. Kids just love to cast and retrieve....just like they see on TV.
Plus you can't fish either 'wrong'.
