Well first off if you have a 12 volt trolling motor, and try to connect it to a 24volt power source you will have some BIG problems. If you have a 24 volt trolling motor, then all you do is connect the positive of one 12 volt battery to the negative of another 12 volt battery, and the negative to the positive of the remaining 2 terminals. Then you run a cable from the trolling motor to either battery. I would suggest an in line fuse, and perhaps even a toggle switch.

if it's a 12 volt motor and you power it with 24 volts, you'll go like hell for a little while.then it's time for a new motor.
not saying i ever did that ![]() |

instead of a fuse use a 50 amp breaker.

If you want to run straight 24 volts, you'll only need two wires. Â*Someone has posted earlier how to do that. I don't recomend that for a 12/24 volt motor. If you have straight 24 to the motor, and accidently hit the switch for the 12 volt side, you'll burn out the 12 volt card. This may or may not disable your motor, I'm not sure.
If you want to run 12/24, I believe you'll need four. Â*One set to get 12 volts, and another to give you 24, for which you'll need a "jumper". Â*The easiest way to do that is buy a 12/24 volt switch. Â*The switch will make the "jump" for you. Â*The switch should come with instructions telling you how to attach the wires. (Frankly I've never figured out why they make 12/24 volt motors. I've never used the 12 volt side of one. All it does is draw down one battery more than the other, not both equally which is what you want.) |

you will need 3 wires for the 12/24 system.however,(and i have done this).you can wire it strictly 24 volts.then you would only need 2 wires to the front of the boat.and a jumper from pos to neg between the batteries.on the motor you will have 3 wires coming out to hook to a plug.USUALLY the heavier wire is the 24v wire.if they are the same size wire, then you will just have to test both wires to see which one is the 24 volt.you can do this without hurting the motor by only sending 12 volts to the front and which ever wire makes the motor go slower on high should be the 24v wire....good luck.
