Default Tech Review

So about two weeks ago I got a Samsung Galaxy S III to replace my Droid Pro. The phone is large but very thin. It is very fast on internet and has a 10 mp camera. The video is superb and you can do alot with just the camera. I added HBO GO and can watch hd shows right on my phone. The WIFI connection allows me to not use hardly any data on the plan I have with Verizon. It also has very nice email and text features.

Got the new docking station today and it is very cool. Replaces my bedroom alarm clock. Senses lights and movement.
Changes to date and time upon movement. Pops up main menu and emails unread with lights on.

Very cool so far.

Yes and no. The Siri on Iphone is way better than the version on the Droid. But it is kinda, a flavor of choice.

I'm due for a new phone next month, I will be sure to check that one out. Hopefully Verizon carries that particular phone.

I got a cheapie free with my ten buck a month plan, makes calls, from just about anywhere.
Id have a hard time learning all that stuff,so keep mine simple, but when they make one that alarm goes off by the time you get dressed coffee eggs and bacon ready ill get one.
Hope it has an auto setting.
Naw those things are great if you can operate and nice you did a review.

Nice! I haven't had any extended experience with Samsung's phones, but I've loved all my Motorola Droid phones. Samsung would be my second choice though.

Gotta love Verizon's 4G LTE. Wicked fast. I'm grandfathered into an unlimited data plan from my old Alltel bundled plan (Verizon bought them out). I bet Verizon hates it when I use a free wifi hotspot to download big files on my home computer and power a few of my friends' laptops. I think I used over 6GB of data last month.

I flip my old cell phone open, punch in some numbers and talk...it's a wonderment.

I was thinking the other day after my old Nextar turn by turn GPS crapped out and so we bought my wife a new Magellan and I took her Garmin...what did we ever do without all these gadgets and gizmos... I mean, I grew up with black and white TV, no remote controls, rotary phones, no microwave, no computers, no cell phones...
How did we survive?!
lol

Btw, nice review Cpt. Mike.

abbey...whadda ya mean no remote tv? i WAS the remote! hahaha. i remember the first "cell phone", my dad got one for his business. a BAG PHONE. man was it a wonder. when i would go to the big city in his car...dial up somebody and talk to them. they would hear the highway niose and asked,"dude, where are you and what are you doing?" i would tell them and they would jsut gasp and say how cool it was. now it's second nature.

oh yeah..i was also the "rabbit ears" on the tv too. ever seen that commercial with the 2 sons hold one end of the antenne each? wel that was me and my brother, hahahaha!! aluminum foil, wire clothes hangers, copper wiring run up the wall.....boy where those the days. lol!

Smart phones are taking out all the gizmos, and combining them into one. My HTC has a pretty decent GPS that I use to navigate in the car, and also used to good effect on my hike/fishing trip into the bighorn mountains. Didn't need service for it to work. I mean I was way out there, and obscured by some big peaks, and the GPS still worked. Battery life was the only constraint, but I picked up a spare on ebay super cheap. Unlike Iphones, you can add memory and switch batteries in seconds.

And the camera is terrific. It actually takes better pictures with its super small lense, in 8 mp resolution, than my much larger 4 year old olympus camera. How they have improved in a few short years is amazing.

I've got an HTC Incredible through Verizon, and it's been a great phone. Only had 2 problems with it in the 3+ years I've had it.....one was some kind of glitch that makes the phone think it's almost out of memory, when in reality it's less than 1/3 full, and the other is now the speaker is really distorted and fuzzy. That just cropped up last week.
I'm due for an upgrade, so I can get this same phone again for free, or pay a little and get something different. Not sure which way to go yet.
I've heard nothing but good about the new Galaxy, so I'll definitely check that out.

WTL - have you checked out a solar charger? I've seen several, but have no idea how efficient they may be. For someone that will be in the boonies for an extended period of time that may be a practical option.

I see them advertised on the outdoor channels a lot. I've also noticed that TW has started carrying them. I think it's a great idea (if it works well) for someone who is going to be in the outdoors for an extended period.
