try a cotton ball soaked in chicken liver and an assortment of other nasty things, we use that for the trot lines, the bream might try to pick it apart, but once it is on the hook it isnt gunna be ripped or tookin off.

Live bream are the best bait for flat-head catfish.

POPR,
We used to use chicken livers tied up in a piece of discarded nylons. (Panty hose to you young pups that are not old enough to remember nylons) We took a piece of nylons about three inches square and layed a piece of chicken liver in the center, then brought the corners together and tied them real tight. We would then put these in the freezer in a plastic container. (Like a cottage cheese tub) when we were going fishing, we set the livers out the night before to thaw. We ran the hook thru the liver bag and then back in to bury the hook. sort of Texas rigged. (Except that was back before Texas riggged bait was thought of) The nylon keeps the bream and turtles from picking the bait apart, but the cats can still swallow it. JackL |

also keep in mind that hybrid striper's are hatcery raised they are fed on dryed chicken liver's. and will readily grab you catfish rigging. if i am cat fishing at night or just drifting behind my jugs. i use gizzard shad-live/dead no matter-under a crappie cork but only 2-4 feet down. i use a 9/0 circle hook or a 6/0 kale hook. not that i see my corks i leave my drags a tad loose which i can tighten in the middle of the fight. what alot of people don't know is at night cat fish feed at or near the surface. if you fish on bottom you will likly catch small cat fish -less than a pound- when a double digit cat grabs a bait there is no dout what you have hooked. oh yeah before i get 20 threads about bait clickers. i use spinning rods 8-14 feet long. i like the cableas king kat combo's they are great for the money and e-glass rods are as tough as nails. i also surf fish with this same rod. zooker

gave ya a headache? hahaha
catfish bait should be what the catfish are accustomed to eating ... natural bait is always best and the fresher the better. I always keep my bait alive and I limit out just about every time I go. got 4 or 5 limits in a row now using fresh shad, carp or buffalo ... just got back from catching a limit in about 4 hours using shad heads cut from live shad .. biggest was 15 lbs ![]() I've got a tips section over on my old site at http://www.catfishin.net/index2.html http://www.catfishing.tv |

I am thinking the name Tiny is far from the truth if you kept all if those catfish to eat.Using bluegill or any type of panfish is illegal here in NY state, but I catch them on store bought Prawn shrimp quite easily.Zooker, when you were here did you ever go to Montezuema swamp for the catfish ? well these fish and others are going for a fund raiser ... The Becky West Cancer Fund Raiser .... the last few trips out i've been gathering fish for the fish fry/fundraiser ... this is her second time doing the chemo and she was no longer able to work and lost all her medical benefits and about to lose their home.
the name tiny was dubbed onto me after the song titled "Tiny Bubbles" they use it for a cadence in the army and when I was nicknamed tiny it was my workers that thought I was a drill seargent ... I ended up growing into the nickname though as I'm over 450 lbs now |

Zooker, I seen a kid pull a 8lb Catfish out of Lake Salubria a couple of weeks ago. They were using crave brand catfish dough bait. If it weren't so big I would have said it was a bullhead, because it didn't have the goldish or light color to the sides, it was blue black with dark spots all over it.I don't think I would eat anything out of there but there are people that do. ;D P N J

wow a channel cat -the black spots are normal-yeah i would not eat any thing that was dragged out of that mud hole.
i figured the mighty chemung river to have cat fish. but not the bath city sewer. there are to many good lakes close by to fish that place to be honest. zooker
