Welcome to the forum!
Depends on what you are fishing. If you are using something like a crankbait or spinnerbait it has been my experience you really don't have to set the hook-I usually have the rod tip low so when I feel a fish I just give a good pull with the rod. Same with a Carolina rig-a side sweep works better for me. For a worm or jig I reel down to it and whip the rod up over my head. that usually does the trick. One other thing that often gets overlooked is the hooks-make sure they are sharp, or the best hookset in the world won't do much good.

I learned that lesson. Lost 7 fish over 3 pounds in one day on a Tube due to a dull hook..................... I carry a hook sharpener with me now..........

to keep it simple i use a 3/0 for the 3 inch tube and 4/0 for the 4 inch.selecting the hook size for a tube is quite different from a regular worm

With single hook baits it's not as much about setting it hard, but setting it quick. With crankbaits and jerkbaits it's imperitive to drive the hook through to get the barb in. This isn't done merely by setting the hook so much as it is by keeping a lot of pressure on the fish. With jerkbaits though some use a similar hook setting technique as you would with a plastic worm because it is such a shallow running bait you may not have time to get the completely driven through before the fish jumps and throws them.

Could be. I've never had a problem, though.

I've learned that with mono just try to rip the lips off because of the stretch and sharpening your hooks thins the metal so your hook will dull faster

Also I've heard and might believe that sharpening them takes the micro layer off opening the hooks to rust but my hooks rust anyways. Oh yeah and a thing I've learned always try to keep pressure on the fish all the way through the fight. Except when he jumps i let off pressure.

Ya i buy all eagle claw's stuff when possible
although the thing that says not to sharpen them could also be a marketing ploy to get you to buy more eagle claw stuff rather than sharpen your old stuff lol...not likely...just thot i'd throw it out there

with single hook baits i crank down and rip it left to right. some times when they are biting lightly i will wait long enough to see which direction they are going before setting against there movement.
with crankbaits i twitch the rod tip -like poping a t-rig loose from a rock- not much just enough.. zooker

I like to throw a little slack in the line then rip the hook set with worms or jigs. I've found if you real down to them and keep the line tight you won't drive the hook as well as if you have a little slack and snap it. Crankbaits... I just pull back hard against them mostly. Don't want to rip the hooks out. I will set the hook hard with a spinnerbait though. A big bass has a hard mouth and you have to drive that hook in sometimes!

Again my hats off to you zook. Very well put on hook settin. First off I wanna say you get what you pay for in a hook. Yes they are expensive but how would you feel if that once in a lifetime bass came unbuttoned because of a dull or not strong enough hook. Feel pretty shi$$y huh. Second hook setting is different depending on line size and lure being used. I have a hookset that will rock a 20ft boat and 90% of the time I dont need to do this but if this is a once in a lifetime fish I want to be sure and drive the hook home. I use Gammy's and Owners depeding on the plastics I am using. Whe I am using 10lb test of lighter I always settle down on my hookset BUT will set or I should say sweep the rod 2 or 3 times to make sure the hooks are imbedded.
