i think the sporting goods mgr.took a shine to me.i asked about 2 symmetre reels that have been on the shelf for quite a while.she said they aren't on clearance yet.but when she changes the price, she's gonna put them on the side for me....

Yes depending on where you live of course. On the other side of that, they also go way down on stock on items. I went yesterday to 2 different stores, and couldn't find any of the hooks I wanted.

Many times the stock is way low in stores , if you shop at wallyworld and don't see what tackle you're looking for, ask the friendly guy behind the counter to see what they have in stock in the whse, thats the only way we could get tiki's a month ago..

For the rest of the winter I am going to fish hair jigs, poppers and modified worms and grubs.

My baits for winter fishing.
1. Dropshot finese worm on 6lb line spinning rod
2. Dropshot fly on 6lb line spinning rod.
3. Dropshot hairjig 6lb line spinning rod.
4. Chartreasue white Crank at depth you are fishing
5. Jerkbait.

I don't fish jigs. I don't think they have enough life to them when they just sit for 1 minute dropshot you can quiver in one spot.
Throw the cranks and jerkbaits on points and deep riprap.

Winter fishing here means taking the ice auger and going through at least 4 inches of ice, sitting on a bucket, scooping out the ice chips from the hole and using 1 or 2 lb test with a jig LOL
Often while seaching for the school ya end up drilling tons of holes to fish over.
Its a nice way to kill an hour or two on a 30 degree winter day up here in oHIo.

well winter fishing here involves using a lighter to put the plug in to your boat. backing it down icy ramps can be and adventur in it's self. of course boat moter not want to crank and ice in the rod eyes are acepted put of the game. wearing so many clothes you would fail a dwi test -basicly cause you can't touch your nose- whipping down a lake in air temps below the freezing mark only to warm up a bit. upon the thottle be cut off-and feeling glad about it- fishing fairly deep currant structure for 8 hours and catching a single fish. yeah i like winter fishing it mentally toughens you. did i mention winter only last from early jan till mid feb -maybe late feb- here...

yep go zipping down the lake and jet skiers sitting in lake front homes watching the football games. will call you nuts...

I don't like ice fishing. I went once with a fellow to Lake Erie in Northern Ohio, but I never got my hook wet. He could not get the hole cut large enough in the ice to put my boat in. They can have their winter ice fishing.

zooker i can tell you fish and go out as much as me. That story hit home.

How many times ya busted yer arse on frost covered boat docks?
Up here they are steep as heck.

Our winter is probably right after Thanksgiving and about the 2nd week in March it quits snowing and gets back in the 40 degree range.
Usually about 3 week in April you can take a bass or too on a jig if you target the north banks..
So..when you go out in jan. do you just look for creek channel near a point? and what ya fish with? jig, worm?......surely that spinnerbait quits workin in jan...

I fish dropshots on brush on points. I caught bass last year in 2 feet of water on points with ice on the lake. They are not always deep in the winter!

Winter time here also means getting out the ice auger, but this past winter, early spring for some, i took out the plastic 4" finesse worm, and did land a nice 3 pounder for my first fish of the year!! it was great!

Zooker, I can tell you still miss the hills and the cold winters here.Deer season started saturday, I passed up 2 buck, a 4 point and a 6 point Saturday, didn't see anything this morning, about ready to get back out tonight. The only reason I passed the 6 point up was it was 30 yards away. I ain't quite comfortable to go that distance with a bow , He will be there for gun season. P N J

i have caught many bass thru the ice in less than 3 ft of water.i've also taken my boat out where i had to bust the ice at the ramp with my trailer, then throw my anchor out in front of the boat to break the ice so i can get to the fishing hole.
that time of year when the ice is too thick to break through and too thin to walk on drives me crazy.that's the only time i can't fish.even then i'll hook up the boat and head farther south sometimes.

When the ice is like that I take a small john boat and scoot it on the ice and hug it, its kinda nerve racking but I figure if I poke through the ice with one foot my body is all ready in the boat. I fished like that alot when the ice looks risky, it moans and groans when it makes ice, but only crack when its thin.
The only bad thing about ice fishing in a john boat is sometimes the bottom freezes to the ice and ya have to pry it loose.
I much prefer the ice to be 5-12 inches thick , plus my new auger gets through real easy , no matter how thick. It takes a good auger if ya end up drilling dozens of holes searching for fish.
The seem to move around in circles in the winter, ya get good bites, then it dies off, then they are on it again..
My choice is a pink small swedish pimple with bee larvae, jigging it off the bottom a few inches, just about every critter down there will hit it...

Zooker, At times it may be difficult to tell, but the answer is no .Most people around here think thats stupid to let anyone hunt with a rifle, it should be left to those who have hunted that way for years without permission, its alot safer that way. P N J
