Default Weekly Lake Fork Fishing Report From Guide Jim Reaneau

Well, I have not been out since the cold front came in. Before the fishing was HOT. I can only assume the bite has slowed some but will rebound by the weekend. I am sure the water temp has dipped to upper fifties to low sixties. We didn’t freeze till this am and was 32 here at 5am but the temp will drop by day light. The fishing should stabilize by the weekend. The main thing is the cold front should run the bank fish off and replace them with the bigger fish. The spinner bait is a good choice right now. Chartreuse and white is the color with gold and silver blades. ½ and 3/8 is the best sizes. Look for grass on points and a little wind and cover the area very good. The Wave Tiki stick and Shadick have been good on a weightless presentation. The Shadick has been good on the Carolina Rig.
The tail spinners, jigging spoons, drop shot, and Carolina rigs have been the deep water presentation.
The Lake Fork Tackle Twitch worm fished on a drop shot wacky or just plain wacky in deep or shallow water has been a killer. I am fishing the wacky on 15 pound line and a 2/0 open hook with a little weight inserted in the head. I use a half ounce weight on my drop shot as I want to get to the bottom and know I am on the bottom and on the windy days it will keep it there. 18 to 24 inches is about the length I use from the bottom. Some days they want it barely jiggled and some days it will take a lot more movement. The Same is true for the jigging spoon and tail spinner. I am casting out and after hitting the bottom I lift the rod slowly and let the bait fall slow back down on a semi slack line. The bar fish and bass are stacking up on the humps. Remember the bar fish is a great eater and will give that small fisherman a good fight. They will make a slow day exciting sometimes. Just because you are catching bar fish don’t think there are no bass there. Just change baits to a worm type and this will increase your chances of catching bass only.
The wind was a factor this week but the forecast shows light wind. This will also be a big help in fishing. I like wind but not 20 plus. This just makes it hard to work the areas you want to fish.
Christmas is not far off and this is a good time to get your special someone that guided fishing trip for Christmas. I can send you a gift certificate for them to open on the big morning. Just give me a call or email me and we can get it in the works.
