i usually fish a medium sized spring fed pond around my neighborhood the water is very clear, up to 8 ft visibility and has lots of hydrilla, but not alot of top water vegetation except for the shallow side and around the island. anybody got any tips? this years winter is very mild even for us. it usually warms up in late Feb.
on the other side of the road is another spring fed pond with almost no vegetation what so ever and is even clearer. this one is very deep. theres a crain underwater in this one because it used to be a sand pit until they hit the spring and it filled up. i've seen monster bass in this one but have never caught anything bigger than a pound except in the other one. there's also catfish and crappie that i've seen caught but never personally. both are constantly fished top waters work good but i'm open to all tips. the place is windmill lakes if anybody is wondering |

bass101,
nice post and well thought out. Even though its texas in winter I am betting a plastic like a craw or a tube in DEEP water, fished slow..I mean real slow may be the ticket. Keep in mind the fish slow down in water temps under 50, if you don't know the water temp just throw out to deep parts of the pond and work it slow..good luck! |

Not sure where you are referring to, but here in South Texas topwaters work early and then we have been using soft plastic jerkbaits like a Zoom Super Fluke or a Tiki Stick. The water was in the low to mid 60's last week and we haven't had a real cold front this week, so I would try spinnerbaits, soft jerkbaits, and crankbaits that resemble shad-the bass we were catching were chasing shad, so we "matched the hatch" so to speak.
When it gets colder, I'd fish around where the spring enters the pond-the spring water will be warmer than the water in the pond, and fish, like people, like to be comfortable.
