backlash is when u dont stop the spool when the lure hits the water. the line in the spool backs up into a big wad of line. most of the time u can get it out just by simply pulling on it and reeling it back in. but sometimes ull get a backlash so bad that u just have to start cutting line or take out all the line and respool it.

	hope that helps |

Well, it is a lot easier than trying to explain what one is, although anybody that has ever used a baitcaster for 5 minutes knows what it is. Just answering the question, so

![]() And like most of y'all, I've had a few world-class backlashes. More than a few, come to think of it!

Yea, backlash ... Just when I think I have mastered my baitcaster ... bam ... backlash. I use a Shimano Curado super free spooler, a Bass Pro Shops (Rick Clunn) and a Abu Garcia Pro Plus.

Another definition might be the mess that results when the line stops going out and the spool continues to turn or when the spool is turning faster than the line is going out.

It reminds me of what I think is one of the funniest one-liners I've ever heard. Jimmy Houston once quipped, "I knew it was gonna be a bad day when I backlashed the toilet paper this morning."

When you backload your rod and the A__H___ in the back of the boat has his #*&%#*&$@#*&%$# crankbait hanging in the air behind you. That is one hell of a backlash (and a hell of a splash when his fat *** hits the water)

You beat me 2 that one. I aint never figured out what possess a person to do this. Here you are sitting in the front and he is sitting in the back day dreaming and you load up for a bass that broke the surface at about 65yds and looked to be a wall hanger then the next half hour you cuttin the line out retying and hopefully not having to repair a broken rod all the while the a@@h@@@ in the back saying....Did I do that man I'm sorry. |

Yep, we've all had them. The worst one I ever got was on what I kept saying was going to be my "last casts" from the shore. Running out of time and realizing I might be going home skunked, I got into the lazy habit of depressing the button during those last few casts. On the final one, I failed to get the reel into free spool and made a mega-hard cast. I made that cast with some much force it created the worst backlash I ever had to date. I didn't bother trying to pick it out.

It was when I got home a light bulb (a rare occrurrence for me) went on over my head. Instead of fussing with the tangled mess, I removed the spool from the reel. It was very easy to undo the mess because the reel's housing was removed from the equation. I would only recommend doing this at home. If you do this out on the water, it would probably be best to find a spot where there will be ZERO possiblity of losing anything in the water or ground.

			Hey Zook,

I don't get backlashes. Each one of my casts is accurate and precise. Well, according to "me" anyway.

Show of hands-how many take several rods out with you for different applications but in the back of your mind you know one of the main reasons is to have a spare reel "just in case"?

I never get backlashes...............I use a spinning reel. I quit using them after making a cast, reel backlashed, I started picking at it and within seconds of the lure hitting the water a bass exploded on the lure. not much of a chance setting the hook or landing that bad boy. now i strictly use spinning reels and concentrate on fishing instead of casting and picking.

Heavier line, heavier baits, heavier cover. Backlashes are just part of the landscape. I have more confidence in throwing a baitcaster.

As I've always said, use what works for you. I just have more confidence in baitcasters, but I always have several spinning rods in the boat. You can't beat a spinning rod for throwing a trap into the teeth of a strong wind.

Actually the memory or lack thereof isn't the problem-it is line twist, which occurs due to the way the line is spooled on. I always either 1. trail it behind the boat when running or 2. take it outside, open the bail, grab the tag end and start walking. Reel it back on and it will untwist as you pull it through your fingers to keep it tight.
