What is the absolute best reel for $200 or less. I'm thinking of getting the new pfluger suprem or the president, Does anyone have any experience with these? It really doesn't matter to me what brand it is as long as its a sweet reel, that casts and reels very smooth and easy and will hold up
for a long time. I would really like to get a couple of chronarks but they just cost to much for my budget, so any suggestions would be very appreciated. My quantams wore out! PHIL G. |

Depends what else you want out of the reel. For me the citica's made between 95 and 2000 have been excellent so far, as well as the calcutta's I bought. The main thing though that determines how long a reel last depends on how well you take care of it. Have it cleaned at least once a season. Keep inside in a clean area and don't let dust build up on it. Back the drag off if your not using the reel for days at a time...so on and so forth. Most of the reels I have are ten years old or older. So I have no experience with the newer stuff.

I like the Shimano Castaic, it's was less than $200 and has a flippin/pitching thumbar. I use this reel more than any of the Calais's I have, so I would highly reccommend them. Not that I don't like my Calais's, just do a awful lot of pitching anymore.

I highly recomend the shimano scorpion or the curado. My girlfriend gave me a scorpion for christmas....pretty sweet. It's pretty much the same as the curado with a few more bells and whistles for about the same price.

Seriously, everyone's got their favorites, mine are Shimano's. Curado, Castiac, I own a couple of each. But I read an article recently in one of the major magazines, a report/review on all the latest models of reels, and I believe the nod for overall bang for the buck was given to the Flugger Presidents Model for under 200.00. They (the reviewer's) also liked the new accurist by quantum, and especially the new Daiwa Viento, right at 200.00. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones mentioned here. As a side note, I don't own a Flugger.

Thanks for all the replys guys, your right I have heard an awful lot of good things about the pfluger president, and the curados, and also the new and improved citicas, but I'v never been able to try any out, and in the store
they all feel good so it really makes it hard to decide what the best deal is. I'll probably go with one of the shimanos, I hav'nt heard a bad thing about them yet. PHIL G. |

The new Pflueger Supreme is a little bit better casting distance wise for windy conditions than the President , but both are very smooth and both cast well. I personally would buy the Supreme with the dual cast control for the money difference. I don't have a Supreme yet , but a freind of mine got 2 Supremes for Christmas and he let me borrow one for a week to cast it to see if I like it or not.I did like it , but I am not looking to buy any reels right now.P N J

Shimano curado. May I also suggest that you take a look at Cabellas Prodigy. Very smooth, has the flippin switch, and a bit less expensive than some of the others mentioned.

I'm not a Pflueger guy so I would suggest a Shimano Curado D. But I have heard good things about the Pflueger Supreme.

either one would be great.the supreme is lighter and has the extra addtion of the magnetic control.this may be an advantage in certain situations.i have a president and i love it.

Thanks alot guys, I ended up with the Team Daiwa viento, in the store it just felt better to me then the others, although they did'nt have any of the new curados for me to check out I feel like I made a pretty good deal on it. It casts great and very accurate, and its very smooth. That twitchin bar is pretty cool. I just hope it holds up like I think it will.

i bought a viento a couple of weeks ago ....and this past sunday i took it back and got a curado....i felt that the viento had good tightness to it...but you can't throw it in any kind of wind....and the brakes had to be put up high on it to which the result was that it hindered my casts....i was very disappointed in it...but that's my humble opinion too....but that new high speed curado i got to replace it ROCKS!!!!.....talk about smooth and tight.....i am very glad i took that viento back to the store .....
