Well, the weather is still holding warm. The shallow water is starting to warm to the upper 50’s and some males are showing up and making some attempts at fanning some beds. The lipless crank bait is still producing some good fish. The weightless Lake Fork Tackle Twitch worm fished wacky is another good shallow water bait. Work it around 3 to 5 feet of water and cover plenty of water and as with the lipless crank bait if you catch a fish work this area over good before moving on. The Wave Tiki stick is another good weightless bait to work around the banks and over flats with shallow water. Be sure to let the fish have the bait for a little while as they may swim with the tail before sucking in the bait.
There are still some deep fish out on the humps and drop offs. Drop shot, spoons, and Carolina rigs have been very effective on these fish. The afternoon bite has been better for the fast moving baits but the jig and pig around creek channels with about 8 to 10 foot of water and sides with 3 to 5 foot have been good on some really nice fish. Fish slow and methodic. Your numbers will be down but your quality may surprise you. The crappie fishing has been very good the last couple of days out in 35 to 30 foot of water. I have been using jigs only and this has been all I needed but I would recommend taking minnows with you just in case. I have some February dates and spring dates left so if you are planning a trip to Lake Fork this year give me a call and we can set you a date.
