Well, as always good things do come to and end. The past week of warm weather and good fishing will come to a halt this weekend. The warm weather had the shallows warming up to the upper fifties and some even got to the sixties. Lipless crank baits and wacky worms was the ticket. The jig did have a day or two of good fishing. The wind was a killer all week. This is setting up for a very windy year with the weather going from cold to warm over night. But some of the best fishing is right around the corner. With the weather this weekend you may have to back off from the bank and work the first break. This is the stumps and possible the creek channel that may run along the area. Flipping a jig around the creek channels that run into the covers will get you a good bite. When the weather goes to ground this pattern is a must for a big bite. You can get out of the wind and pitch every tree, stump, and lay down. You may have to hit a target several times before you get a strike. But on the windy days when you think all is lost this will help your pitching and cast control. Don’t pitch out but ten feet. Work in close to your target and spool your reels with some heavy line like 25# mono or bread. The Lake Fork Tackle Twitch Worm and the Wave Worm Tiki Stick were the best baits for the wacky worm. The fluke has caught a few fish for me but the wacky worm was the best pattern. The lipless crank bait in red or gold on the cloudy days was a good bet. This week things happened as I have written before. Once you get a bite work the area over slowly. We had two places that held fish that was on bigger than fifty or sixty feet along the bank. We would go back and forth and we managed to catch a fish almost every pass. Keep this in mind as you are fishing. The wind has kept most crappie fishermen at home. The main lake was and ocean several days this week. I bass fished all week and am not sure how the ones who ventured out did this past week.
I still have some days in March and April open if you are planning a trip give me a call. Jim Reaneau 1-888-918-5088 |
