Default Observation

I have been fascinated watching bass shows, commercials, DVD's, etc. where a bass picks up or takes a bait into its' mouth. When you slow down a tape and watch the bass take the bait in slow motion I have observed two things. When it is a tube type bait the bass seems to partially take the tube in it's mouth and bite down on it. Then he takes it the rest of the way in his mouth. The other type of baits, crankbait types specifically, they hit it from the side or straight into their mouth. Seems like anything that resembles a crawfish is crushed first. A minnow type is swallowed or just caught till it can turn it arround to swallow. So I concluded that it is important to understand what each bait resembles to use this information in catching bass. A lot more further study is imminent to make any sound conclusions. Anyone concur or disagree?

I'd say you have solved part of the puzzle-knowing how a fish hits the bait can make a difference in setting the hook. the "double tap" you often feel is a good example-the first tap is the bass crushing the bait, the second is it flaring it's gills and sucking the bait in. Or the second tap could be the bass spitting the bait out .

Bassin Bob, If you think about too much , you will only fish a tube bait. It can resemble both a baitfish or a crawfish depending on what presentation you use while fishing it. P N J

Only when the craw or tube is sitting on the bottom. But when you are flipping, it seems the bass inhales the bait. Normally when flipping, the bait is suspended in the grass, or you are jigging it up and down.
