Default Kentucky Lake Report

Alright, the weather has been crazy here on KY lake the past several days. The water temperatures last saturday were around 45 degrees. The weather warmed up, and we had several warm hard rains from thursday until saturday. In a matter of less than a week, the water temp. jumped up to about 56 on the main lake, and we found 60 degree water in some bays!!!!! This weather sent the bass runnin for the warmest water they could find, and during our tournament saturday there were about 10 limits weighed in. The winning weight for paying members was about 16 pounds, and the winning weight for college students was a notch under 17.

The majority of the fish were caught in the backs of bays in 4 or 5 feet of water. Several anglers found fish by flipping cover while others caught fish on spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and lipless cranks. Jerkbaits also produced a number of fish.

The drum bite was also in full swing I found out, as I preceded to catch 9 whoppers during the day. My largest was close to 20 pounds and my smallest at least 5. (If you're fishing KY and want to catch drum just throw a table rock shad pattern suspending bait and let it suspend....those stupid fish will destroy it)

Today I went out w/ a buddy of mine just before dark. We caught two largemouth being 2 and 3 pounds, and one decent smallie of about 2 pounds. These fish were caught right on the bank w/ lipless cranks.

The bite is on and its shallow. Go out there and whack em!!!

Oh buddy, the first week of Oct. is my time to shine on KY lake. I can always pull a lot of good fish that time of year. By the way, what tournament are you fishing?? I have an American Bass Anglers National event coming out of Kentucky Dam the first week of october. We should have at least 250 boats. If you need any info or want to prefish pm me and I'll show you some places.

LOL you have 250 boats and we are expecting close to 400!! They wont all be going out of KY dam though but a fourth of them will be. Starting the first Thursday of Oct.-Sat. Man that will be alot of boats on the water.

This is the Midwest Sportsman Series Classic. My partner and I will probably be there all week before pre-fishin. Will keep in touch.

Default Kentucky Lake info

I will be up there June 3rd - 9th for the Bass Federation Southern Divisionals. We will be staying in Hurricane Mills and putting in at Cuba Landing. Any tips for that time of year? I have heard that most of the fishing will be of shore. What about some of the floating marinas? Also is Cuba Landing in the actual lake or in the river system?

Well, on KY and Barkley Lakes they just passed a law that says you can't flip marinas. Private docks are good to go though. If you like flipping docks, find those that are above really deep creek channels. I've caught my largest fish out of little river on Barkley where the docks are in about 20 feet of water. As far as winning tournaments, there is a tuesday night tournament series during the summer in which I have a few friends that fish it. All those tournaments are won offshore in the summer on deeper drops and humps. Dan Morehead and Terry Bolton fish that series, and they usually dominate. I would put my money on the tournament being won from an angler fishing a jig or carolina rig offshore on the deep drops and humps, especially if they had opened the spillway gates to drop the water.

I got to meet Dan Moorehead on the lake the first year he had just graduated college and was engaged to his g/f...what a nice guy! He sure helped me out with colors of lures and many other tips...that was probably about 10 years ago now. Never got to fish with him but have been on the water while he's practicing.

JB,

Morehead and Bolton are both nice guys. If you follow the FLW tour, take a look at the angler of the year standings. Morehead is in 6th. He is fishing the BFL on Kentucky/Barkley lake this weekend. It will be cool fishing. The air temps are in the 40's to low 50's during the day and in the lower 30's at night. The bite was on prior to this last cold front. A friend of mine fished last week and they caught a bunch.

jb,
Have you been in that area since last November? A tornado wiped out the campground at moors. It was unreal to see campers in the lake. I was in that area last Saturday evening going to our camper at Jonthan Creek and there was a sign that said moors was open. Go to their web site and you can see photos of it. The pics are impressive with respect to the power of a storm and sad at the same time. Enjoy the lake and good luck fishing.

It was amazing. The tornado took out the campground but left the cabins and main resort alone, untouched. I don't know what else, if anything, it tore up on the lake. As you drive down Hwy 68 you can tell the exact path the tornado took as it crossed the highway. Houses destroyed and a few hundred yards away a trailer stands unharmed. Moors has seem to bounce back quicker than we thought it could!
