Well, the toughest fishing conditions have hit Lake Fork this last week. The good news is the 7.25 inches of rain has the lake coming up. Many creeks are stained to down right muddy. We are about 2 ½ feet low and still coming up slowly. There is plenty of clear water to fish if fishing muddy water bothers you. The water temp has dropped to the low to mid fifties . I can atest to this temp as one of my customers lost his balance and was falling out of the boat and took me with him. We were lucky there were not stobs or stumps where we fell but the water was VERRRRRRY cold. The freezing morning temps and the strong winds are no help in the fishing problems. The main thing the fish are still biting. They are not like they were before the fronts but enough to keep you interested.
The rattle trap and spinner bait have been my go to baits. I am covering plenty of water but slowing down when I catch a fish. I will then work this area slowly and then change to a slow moving bait. Split shoting Lake Fork Zig Zags in these areas have been very good producers. Fishing the above mention bait wacky has been good. You can put a nail in the head to give it a little weight. I had a good Carolina rig bite but it went with the fronts. I was fishing points and along the banks with a light weight Carolina rig. The Wave Tiki stick fished wacky or weightless has been very good in and around the grass and timber. The fish we are catching are fat and ready to spawn. With a couple days of sun shine the fish will be back on the banks in good numbers. Right now five feet of water out has been the best producing depth. I am fishing in 55 degree water. Don’t forget a jig is a good cold weather bait. Flipping timber, Stumps, and grass edges can find you a BIG SOW waiting to drop her eggs. The key is go slow and work your fishing areas very good. I still have some April dates open if you want to book a trip give me a call. Jim Reaneau 1-888-918-5088 |
