Hey Rebbasser I fished the BPS Fritts reel saturday.

I just remembered I would give you a "review" on the Fritts reel. I went fishing saturday and got a chance to really give the reel a work out. Upshot it performed without any problems at all eg. casts extremely well. I got huge distance with it. I caught some very nice bass one 5 lb. although the reel had a small part in doing so, but maybe not. I think the retrieve is critical the 4.7 is a big confidence thing for me. I've caught so many quality bass with this type of reel its a MAJOR confidence issue for me. Its a very nice looking reel also, just plain black and has a wonderful power handle that is counter-balanced. The reel does not have "super stopper" it has what we used to call "gear slop" its kind of like a transmission of "feel" when you hook-up with a bass. I'm happy with it !

sure Reb your welcome. heres something I found about this retrieve for crankbaits :High Rock Lake.David Fritts,Gerald Beck David Wright just to name some of them.All of them swear buy the old Lews reels @ 4.3to1.Fritts tells me that 3.8 does not give the bait its complete action and the 5.1 moves the bait through the target area too quick.If only knew how many tournaments these guys have won I think you would have too agree with them.The new David Fritts reel from Bass Pro Shop is very good.It has the six pin adjustment on the left side to help with the lighter baits. It works !

Man, I am a crankbait guy at heart and your review makes me want to go buy one. Can it toss 3/16 oz crankbaits too? And could you explain what "gear slop" is? I am growing weary of high speed reels not feeling "right" when working crankbaits and have heard that the lower gear ratio is the way to go. Thank you. I have found your review encouraging.

"Gear Slop" are the generation of reels before "super-stopper" you know like "hooksetter" no back play in the handle. I think David Fritts is dead on I have an old Lews and it does transmitt feel as you crank. hope this helps I'm rushe for work.

Islandbass, to add a little to what Sluggo said, older reels don't have instant anti-reverse like they have today-you can backreel maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of a handle revolution, which is what he is referring to.

Thanks, Sluggo and Reb! I think I got it now. I guess it's kind of like on super low end spinning reels that have a little bit of play before it locks.
